Blackhawks open track and field season at West Valley Invite

The Cheney girls captured third and the boys ninth in opening track and field action last Saturday at the West Valley Invitational in Millwood. Overall 12 teams competed in the girls’ competition, 13 in boys.
Sanne Holland, Kendall Dunn and Chae Brown led the Blackhawk girls with first place finishes. Holland captured the 3,200-meter run with a time of 11 minutes, 16.50 seconds while Dunn was first in the 300-meter hurdles in 49.13 and Brown claiming top honors in the field by winning the triple jump with a leap of 36-feet even.
Dunn also brought home second in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.48. Brown was sixth in the 100-meter dash (13.80), Johanna Sherman sixth in the 100 hurdles, freshman Abby Hammermeister ninth in the 400 and the 4x200 and 4x400 relay teams fourth and sixth respectively.
In the field the Blackhawk girls also got second-place finishes from Kinsey Pease and Erin Clark, Pease in the javelin with a toss of 111 feet and Clark in the pole vault at 11 feet. Courtney Schwendiman landed a top-10 finish, taking fifth in the triple jump at 33-09.
Calvin Berstler led the boys’ team with a first-place in the 110 hurdles at 16.05. Jesse Hallstrom was fifth in the 800 (2:04.15), Tom Trude 10th in the 400 and the 4x100 and 4x400 teams both finished seventh.
In the field Eric Igbinoba was third in the triple jump with a leap of 41-04 and ninth in the long jump, with Joey Kowalski 10th.
