New traffic striping on SR 904 and First Street in Cheney is being named as a factor in a reduction of traffic accidents along the route according to police reports.

By a 5-2 vote, the Cheney City Council authorized another $200,000 in expenditures related to installation of a new fiber optics phone cable.

According to a report presented to the Medical Lake Planning Commission traffic in the city was expected to grow significantly from nearly 31,000 cars a day projected in 2000 to almost 48,000 by 2025.

With Fairchild Air Force Base being on a heightened level of security due to the war in Iraq, officials warned the Medical Lake School District that a sudden base closure could mean children attending would not be able to attend classes.

Cheney inproved its overall record in boys’ soccer to 5-0, 2-0 in Greater Spokane League play following a 1-0 shootout win over Gonzaga Prep. Cody Kendall’s goal in the 79th minute tied the game.

March, 22 1963

Cattle rustlers struck the Herman Willm’s ranch located two miles north of Cheney and made off with one of his prize calves valued at $150.

Sixteen truckloads of trash were picked up from 50 miles of roadside in the Amber area by volunteers from the Amber 4-H Amber Grange and Lance Hill 4-H. The event attracted over 100 volunteers.

The Cheney City Council announced that beginning April 1 and lasting through Oct. 15, the city’s dog ordinance would be strictly enforced. That meant all dogs not confined or on a leash would be subject to impoundment and all such animals were required to be licensed.

Cheney’s Best and East Liberty Schools were selected as sites that would be administering the Sabin Type 3 polio vaccine over two days, March 30 and 31.

EWSC baseball coach Ed Chissus announced that eight letterman would return for the 1963 season where games would be played at Cheney High due to Eastern not having a “home diamond.”
