Tattooing is just an art form for Matt Quale at his new shop in Airway Heights, No Surrender Tattoo.
Quale and his wife Terese opened the shop about three weeks ago at 12924 W. Sunset Highway, hiring four tattoo artists. Combined, everyone in the shop has about 25 years of experience in the industry.
A big part of the reason for choosing Airway Heights as the location for the shop was competition. Compared to Spokane, where the market is saturated, the area seemed like a perfect venue.
“We didn’t want to open a shop with a ton of competition,” Quale said.
Inside, the tattoo artists can handle just about any art. Whether it’s black and gray, Japanese or American traditionalism art styles, Quale and his team are up to any task. Examples of previous work adorn the shop’s walls, showcasing a veritable arsenal of potential designs for customers.
“He’s always been an artist in some form or another,” Terese said.
Quale said custom designs are accepted as well.
“Anything that’s not on our walls, we can draw it for you,” Quale said.
After some discussion, it took about six months to open the store, but the process eased up along the way.
“It’s been fantastic,” Quale said. “The (tattoo) quality has never been in this area.”
While moving out to the West Plains had its challenges, they were lessened by the support from returning Air Force customers, who stuck with Quale.
“We have a really strong Air Force clientele who followed him out to this shop,” Terese said.
Quale has always had an affinity for doodling and drawing throughout his life. From there, he eventually spent a year learning the tattoo craft in an apprenticeship. As an apprentice, part of what he learned included distinguishing a good tattoo from the rest of the pack.
“You want to be able to put a good tattoo in while doing little damage to the skin,” he said.
It’s that quality, Quale says, that separates him from other tattoo shops in the Spokane area. Working as a tattoo artist helped him to fill that desire to draw.
The bottom line is that customers should have a fun time when visiting the shop. Quale and his team place their priority on having a well-run business open for customers. The environment in the store does its best to reflect that.
“We hope they have a blast coming out here,” Quale said.
