Cheney swimmers fall at Pullman, prepare for 2A districts

The Cheney boys’ swimming team concluded its 2012-2013 Eastern Washington meet schedule Jan. 19 in competition in Pullman against the Greyhounds, losing 116-54 to the deeper Pullman team.

Chris Boyle and Scott Nadeau led the Blackhawks with first place finishes in the 50-yard freestyle and the 100 butterfly, with Boyle touching the wall first in the 50 in 25.55 seconds and Nadeau taking first in the butterfly in 1:01.31. Both swimmers also notched a pair of seconds, Boyle in the 100 breaststroke in 1:13.48 and Nadeau the 200 individual medley in 2:19.69.

Nick Steele grabbed a second place finish in the 500 free in 5:48.11, taking third in the 200 free in 2:03.46. Kit Foster was third in the 100 free in 1:03.71 to wrap up Cheney’s individual finishes.

In the relays, the 200 free team of Steele, Nadeau, Boyle and Foster finished second in 1:44.75 while the 400 free team of Steele, Boyle, Jeff Edwards and Nadeau was second in 3:53.43.

Cheney now turns its attention to 2A/3A/4A Districts this Friday and Saturday at Central Washington University’s pool in Ellensburg. Head coach Jennifer Hochwalt said she isn’t sure what to expect this year since not only are there new teams competing at the 2A level, but there are also several 2A schools like Cashmere swimming in co-op arrangements with larger schools.

The best the Blackhawks can do is to focus on their own skills and efforts, something Hochwalt said they have been doing the past week and will do this week in preparation.

“We’re resting and refining our speed to get ready for some fast swims,” she said.

District champions and swimmers exceeding state time qualifying marks advance to state competition Feb. 15-16 at the Aquatics Center in Federal Way.
