The longest road trip of the season for the Eastern Washington University men’s basketball team got off to a bad start even before they took to the court last Thursday in Grand Forks, N.D.
A van wreck following Wednesday’s shoot-around injured seniors Kevin Winford and Jeffrey Forbes, knocking them out of the lineup for a pair of games the Eagles lost 65-47 to NDU and 72-56 in Greeley to Northern Colorado Saturday.
The losses were the Eagles’ third straight and sent them into last place in the Big Sky Conference with a 2-6 record, 4-14 in all games with their long game a Saturday contest in Cedar City versus Southern Utah (3-5, 5-12).
“Hopefully we’ll be at full strength,” head coach Jim Hayford said. “Hopefully (Kevin) Winford will be back and that will really help us a lot.”
A record-tying performance by freshman Venky Jois went for naught against Northern Colorado. Jois equaled the school record of seven blocked shots set earlier this season by teammate Martin Seiferth, finishing with 15 points. Senior Collin Chiverton added 13 points and sophomore Parker Kelly another 11.
A bright spot for Eastern was its continued solid defensive effort that held the Bears to 38 percent shooting.
Seiferth scored 14 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots in just 26 minutes to lead the Eagles, and Jois added his eighth double-double of the season with 12 points and 14 rebounds.
