County deputies investigate Airway Heights shooting

Spokane County Sheriff officers are continuing to work on a shooting near Airway Heights on the 4000 block of North Garfield Road Sunday, Jan. 13 at 4:30 a.m.

Once arriving on scene, officers located a deceased adult male in the residence, now identified as James S. Cavazos, 31, who died from a gunshot wound to the head or neck, according to the medical examiner’s office.

Officers arrested his father Mark Cavazos, 52, for second-degree murder and booked him into the Spokane County jail, booked on a $100,000 bond. He will have an arraignment Tuesday, Jan. 22.

Media reports said Mark and his son were arguing in the evening when the elder Cavazos went to retrieve a gun. Cavazos was allegedly pointing it at his son when it accidently fired. Alcohol was reported to be a factor earlier in the evening.

Major crimes detectives and forensics officers spent much of Sunday investigating the scene of the crime.

The county’s investigation is ongoing, with updates coming in future editions.
