King is clicking for Cardinals on the wrestling mat

Anton King is on a roll on the wrestling mat lately.

The 138-pound senior won his weight class in convincing fashion scoring a fall and a pair of major decisions in sweeping competition for the win at the Cheney Invite.

Earlier, King emerged the champion at the M-2 Mallet Tournament at Rogers High School in Spokane, Dec. 29 and then in the Cardinals’ Jan. 3 match at Freeman.

Zeb Klemke, also a senior, finished second at Cheney.

William Kearney a 285-pound sophomore was third after a first round bye and a pin before losing by a fall and winning by default over his Pullman opponent.

“We wrestled well this weekend at the Cheney Invite, it was a really competitive tournament,” Medical Lake head coach Sam Petersen said.

Nick Reed a 106-pound freshman finished sixth with a pair of his wins by fall.

“All but two of our wrestlers won at least one match,” Petersen said.

Besides King’s win at Freeman in a 45-28 loss, Tristen Keith (120), Klemke and Petersen gave the Cardinals a quick start but the Scotties posted the next seven wins before Kearney and Reed both got late pins.

Klemke won his consolation final at Rogers as did Rickey Petersen at 132 pounds and heavyweight Kearney.

The Cardinals wrestle at home tonight (Jan. 10) versus Newport and then compete in the River City Duals this weekend at Post Falls.

A make-up for a match with Kettle Falls that was postponed due to weather will take place Wednesday, Jan. 16 with Freeman wrestling the Bulldogs first and Medical Lake following with another dual.
