Other newsworthy events in Medical Lake


Gun thefts spur large, county-wide search: Late September saw the theft of over 20 guns from a Medical Lake residence, spawning a county-wide effort to find the weapons. Some were recovered a month later during a traffic stop, where Cody Wolfley, 20, was arrested and charged with first-degree armed burglary and other charges. The investigation is ongoing.

Medical Lake Food Bank moves across town: Following a continued surge in new clients, the food bank moved a few blocks away from its previous location in the Dora Burt Center on Lefevre Street. The new facility has almost double the space previously available and allowed for easier operations to take place.

Fire burns historic house: Medical Lake saw its fair share of fires this year, with a large brush fire, potential arson case and the destruction of one of its early homes from the late 19th century. The home was a total loss and remains were later hauled off from the property. The owner was renovating the house in hopes to develop it into a bed and breakfast business.

Medical Lake turns down JLUS: The City Council voted to turn down Spokane County’s Joint Land Use Study document in May, which would have placed land-use restrictions on new developments in the city. Residents spoke out at open houses and planning commission meetings, concerned about the loss of private property rights. The day after voting no, Spokane County voted to remove its urban growth area in a situation that is still developing.

SCOPE volunteers take on a larger role at sub-station: Volunteers with the Medical Lake-Espanola SCOPE were taking on a more active role at the Medical Lake police sub-station. Helping Detective Bob Sola at the front desk, they would help to provide visitors with information on where to direct potential situations. They also help pick up evidence from across Spokane County, allowing detectives to focus on more cases, increasing the effectiveness of the office.

9: Charges filed in marijuana theft shooting from 2011

In December 2011, two teenagers broke into the shed of a residence on the 600 block of Grant Street in Medical Lake, attempting to steal marijuana plants. The homeowner, Justin Brown, chased them off his property, shooting one of the juvenile males in the back. This (2012 month), Brown received charges of second-degree assault, as well as possession and manufacture of a controlled substance relating to the Dec. 19, 2011 event.
