Eastern to meet Southern Utah for first time in VB

It's a busy weekend in Cheney and the Eastern Washington University volleyball team gets it all started with an anticipated match-up against new Big Sky member, Southern Utah, tonight (Sept. 27) at Reese Court. First serve between the Eagles and Thunderbirds is slated for 7 p.m. Eastern will then take on one of the league's best teams in 2012, Northern Arizona, Friday, Sept. 28, also at 7 p.m.

After a disappointing trip to Montana where Eastern lost to Montana State 3-2 and then was swept by Montana 3-0, the volleyball team is still looking for its first win of the 2012 campaign. Eastern did take two sets off Montana State before narrowly losing the match in five, but then the Eagles endured their 11th sweep of the season at the hands of the Griz.

EWU track team hires Erik Rasmussen as jumps coach

The Eastern Washington University track and field team has hired Erik Rasmussen as the new jumps and multi-events coach.

Rasmussen was a volunteer assistant pole vault coach at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, from September 2008 through August 2012. He has a Level I USATF Coaching Certification and a Level II Certification in jumps.

“I'm really looking forward to working with all the jumpers,” Rasmussen said. “Eastern is a great fit for me. Not only do they have great athletes, they have good values and emphasize preparing athletes for life after athletics, and that fits in well with my philosophy.”

During his time with the Cougars, he coached three first-team All-Americans and 12 NCAA preliminary round qualifiers. He helped seven individual athletes reach a total of 15 appearances at the NCAA National Championship meet. During the 2011 indoor season, Rasmussen coached four athletes who qualified for the NCAA National Championships.

New mobile phone apps available for following EWU sports

It's easier than ever to follow Eastern Washington University athletic teams via mobile phones, as well as via the Internet on computers and tablet devices. And best of all, it's all free of charge.

Through enhancements made by America One Sports -- the Big Sky Conference provider of league-wide webcasts – most EWU home events in football, basketball and volleyball are available via mobile phones by going to www.bigskytv.org. That location is also home to Internet broadcasts, which are also accessed free, just by registering an email address with America One.

Eagles score 7-1 hockey win over West Sound team

Eastern Washington University's men's hockey team played one of two exhibition games scheduled in advance of their 2012-13 British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League season last Friday at the Student Recreation Center where they defeated the Northern Pacific Junior League's West Sound from Bremerton/Gig Harbor, Wash. 7-1. No scoring details were available.

The Eagles were to have played Northern Alberta Institute of Technology but a coaching change at the school forced cancellation of that game.

The Eagles play their final tune-up Sunday in Castlegar, B.C. versus BCIHL foe Selkirk College. Eastern starts their season on the road with a trip to the Vancouver area for games Oct. 5 at Trinity Western and Oct. 6 at Simon Fraser. Eastern's home opener is Saturday, Oct. 13 versus Thompson Rivers from Kamloops, B.C.

“One thing that stood out was that two of our freshman, Uriah Machuga, and Zach Maxwell had excellent games along with Cash Ulrich in net,” head coach Bill Shaw said. “If we can get those guys to contribute at that level all year we will be fine.”
