Cardinals claim twin wins at Connell Invite CC race
By PAUL DELANEY
After Saturday's showing at the Connell Invitational cross country race there may not be many event organizers who choose to let Medical Lake race.
Poor air conditions forced cancellation of the Seaport Invitational in Clarkston last Saturday so the defending boys' champions of that event were left without a place to race.
Some quick action by Cards' head coach Gene Blankenship landed his teams down US 395 where they promptly won both boys' and girls' 1A championships on the 5,000-meter course.
“The Cardinals had an extremely good day,” Blankenship said. “Not only did the boys' and girls' varsity teams both win the 1A varsity title, but they also both beat all the schools from all divisions.”
The ML girls won by a wide 30-91 margin over Zillah with host Connell third at 114. The boys had a little tougher time scoring a 36-55 win over Quincy.
Josie Lonai from McLoughlin High in Milton Freewater, Ore. paced the girls' side with a time of 20 minutes, 34.9 seconds, topping Medical Lake's Kelby Wegner who was a close second at 20:48.3. Sakaiya McCoy of Medical Lake was sixth at 21:23.2. With a time of 22:21 Kaylin Sattler finished 11th.
Logo's Paul Ryan was the top finisher on the boys' side with a time of 16:11.2 with Medical Lake runners Micah Dingfield (17.0) and Zeb Klemke (17.09) rounding out the top three. Domenic Rehm was knocking on the door of the top-10 with a time of 18.00 in 11th.
The JV boys also beat all the schools present and the JV girls came in second among all of the entrants. In addition, Medical Lake Middle School ran well, taking first among the girls' teams and third in the boys' competition.
