The Cheney girls swimming team continued to show improvement in their lone dual meet last week.

The Blackhawks notched their first individual event wins of the season last Thursday in Clarkston, even though Cheney came away with a loss to the Bantams. The score was not available at press time due to “incorrect scoring,” but head coach Jennifer Hochwalt said the Bantams scored sufficiently to still get the win.

Kaylie Geschke, Brittany Meyer and Kaylie Watters all touched the wall first in at least one individual event. Geschke was first in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2 minutes, 39.34 seconds, with Meyer first in the 100 butterfly in 1:24.82 and Watters first in the 100 breaststroke in 1:19.29.

Second place finishes went to Erin Moseley in the butterfly (1:24.94), Katie Shea in the 100-freestyle (1:06.89) and Geschke in the 500 free (6:03.29). Taking third was Sophie Schwalbe in the 200 free (2:33.28) and the 500 free (6:51.39), Watters in the 50 free (29.26) and Meyer in the 100 backstroke (1:26.91).

The 200 freestyle relay team of Shea, Meyer, Geschke and Watters shaved 1.3 seconds off their time against Ellensburg Sept. 13 to take second at Clarkston while the 400 A team of Watters, Geschke, Shea and Schwalbe dropped 4.28 seconds for second against the Bantams. The 200-medley team of Kora Wevers, Samantha Abbott, Meyer and Kierra Heiydt was third in 2:36.27 while the 400-relay B team of Moseley, Wevers, Heiydt and Abbott was third in 5:13.13.

“Pretty much everybody dropped times in one event and about half in two events so that was exciting,” Hochwalt said.

The swimmers have been competing in their strongest events so far this season, but that is going to change at this Saturday's meet with West Valley-Yakima, moved from Cheney's home pool at Eastern Washington University to Lions Pool in Yakima due to the Eagles' football game with the University of Montana. Hochwalt said she's going to move swimmers around against the Rams to see how they perform in new events.
