Cardinal CC team opts for Connell
Smoky conditions forced cancellation of last Saturday's Seaport Classic cross country race in Clarkston, Wash. and Medical Lake was left without a race to run.
This week, with the Wenatchee Invite in question due to similar problems with wildfires, Cardinals' head coach Gene Blankenship is making alternate plans.
“I emailed Wenatchee Tuesday and haven't heard back,” Blankenship said. “I can't see how the air quality will be okay by Saturday, so we've signed up for the Connell Invite.”
Eagles take 3-game win streak into Big Sky soccer play
With momentum from three-straight wins, the Eastern Washington University women's soccer team is in a good place headed into conference play.
The Eagles kickoff Big Sky competition this Friday (Sept. 21) at 4 p.m. against Weber State at the EWU Sports and Recreation Center Soccer Field. Conference action continues Sunday (Sept. 23), when the Eagles take on Idaho State at 11 a.m.
The Eagles used goals by sophomore Cassie Black and Haley Stading in the 2-0 non-conference win over Idaho last Friday. Sunday, Danielle Jones and Cassie Black scored in a 2-1 win over Hawaii.
In the team's last three wins, the two players have accounted for five of Eastern's six goals. Black also recorded two goals in the win against Boise State.
Last year, the Eagles dealt the Wildcats a 3-0 loss for Eastern's only conference win of the 2011 season. In 2011, Idaho State defeated Eastern 2-1 in Pocatello.
Black earns new POW soccer award
Sophomore forward Cassie Black has done it again. As a starter for the Eastern Washington University women's soccer team, Black's offensive prowess is turning a lot of heads.
After doubling her total number of season points this past weekend from four to nine, Black was recognized by both the Big Sky Conference and College Sports Madness as Offensive Player of the Week. This is the second consecutive week she has garnered the Big Sky recognition and her first time receiving the accolade from College Sports Madness.
Black impressed with her performances against Idaho and Hawaii this past weekend, adding two goals and one assist to her season total.
Eagles can't hold on against Vikings
Playing in front of a rowdy home crowd for the first time this season, the Eastern Washington University volleyball team couldn't find quite enough of what it takes to get past Portland State this past Monday. The Eagles fell to the Big Sky Conference foe, 3-0 (27-25, 25-17, 25-17) at Reese Court.
With the loss, Eastern drops to 0-12 in the 2012 season and 0-2 in Big Sky Conference action, while the Vikings improve to 6-7 overall and 2-0 in league play.
In the first set on Monday, it looked as though home court advantage would pay off for the Eagles, as the home team went on a 6-0 run late in the set to secure a 23-20 lead. But following a timeout called by Portland State, the Vikings scored four-consecutive points to earn the first set point of the night at 24-23.
In the second set, the Eagles struggled to find an offensive rhythm, recording a -.059 attack percentage. That lack of offense also affected Eastern's defensive flow. After getting four blocks in the opening frame, Eastern did not record another one the rest of the night.
Despite the loss, sophomore Talia Fermantez had one of her best offensive performances of the year, with 13 kills and just three errors on 20 total attempts.
Eastern dropped its 12th-straight match last Thursday (Sept. 13) to Sacramento State, 3-0 (25-18, 28-26, 25-18).
The Eagles will head back out on the road for its next Big Sky contests, starting with Montana State (7-3, 1-1) tonight (Thursday, Sept. 20) in Bozeman. Eastern will then face Montana (2-9, 0-2) Saturday in Missoula. The Eagles return home for matches Thursday, Sept. 27 to face BSC newcomer Southern Utah and Northern Arizona, Friday, Sept. 28, both matches at 7 p.m.
EWU hockey opens against Alberta school Friday
Eastern Washington University's men's hockey team will test itself in their lone exhibition game Friday, Sept. 21 at the Student Recreation Center in a contest against Northern Alberta Institute of Technology.
The opening face off is set for 7 p.m. as the Eagles begin their second season of play in the British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League.
The Eagles open league play on the road Oct. 5-6 with games at Trinity Western and Simon Fraser. EWU's home opener is Oct. 13 versus Trinity.
As Eastern prepares to meet the visitors from Edmonton, Alberta Friday night, they do so having finished the 2011-12 season with a 7-12-5 record but have five new top prospects to replace the loss of five players who graduated.
“We lost Taylor McClay, Cam Sargent, Nick Othmer, Justin Crosby, and Nick Kelly from last year,” head coach Bill Shaw said. But they return a core of their top offensive performers including leading scorer Bret Kellogg (24 games, 11 goals, 15 assists, 26 points) as well as AJ Sanders (24, 10-10-20), Jake Flynn (24, 11-8-19) and Ryan Pajimola who pitched in 6 goals and 13 points in an injury-shortened season.
The Eagles also return their goaltending tandem of Jason Greenwell and Cash Ulrich.
On defense the Eagles have brought in Zach Maxwell who played college hockey last year. “The rest of our blue line will be familiar names,” he said, including senior Justin Crosby and junior Nick Kelly.
“We are still working on finding pairings back there we like,” Shaw said.
In addition to a number of returning players, J.C. Thomas returns as an assistant coach. Eastern has recruited goaltender coach Erik Hudson who played at Iowa State and then professionally.
