West Plains Little League junior all-stars place fourth at state tournament

August 30, 2012

The majors' softball team wasn't the only West Plains Little League All-Star squad enjoying success this past summer.

The Junior League All-Star team advanced to state tournament play by capturing their sixth overall District 13 title. The 13- and 14-year-olds from Cheney, Medical Lake, Airway Heights and surrounding areas downed South Spokane by 10 runs in the first game, and eight runs in the championship to capture WPLL's fifth Junior League district title in six years.

The wins sent the WPLL team to state competition July 15-22 at District 2, Port Orchard, where they fell behind 8-0 in the first three and a half innings in losing their opener 11-1 July 16 to eventual state runner-up Bonney Lake/Sumner (District 10). Knocked into the elimination bracket the West Plains team went on a three-game roll, downing the hosts from South Kitsap 11-5, 10-running South Skagit (District 11) 11-1 and trouncing Seattle's Queen Anne (District 8) 19-6 to set up a rematch July 21 with Bonney Lake/Sumner.

In the second game the District 10 squad scored two runs in the second and three in the fourth before West Plains rallied with three in the bottom of the fifth to pull within 5-3. West Plains could get no closer, losing 5-3 and finishing the tournament with a 3-2 mark, good enough for fourth place in state overall.

“The boys played five games in seven days and played their heart out in every one,” Junior League All-Star head coach Brian Witt said.

The West Plains team was composed of Sam Brown, Andrew Witt, Harrison King, Cory Wagner, Jordan Calero, Brayden Hale, Logan Pratt, Jackson Shaw, Chance Gleave, Matthew Christianson, Riley Jones and Tristen Keith. West Plains' coaches Dan Wagner and Austin Sharp assisted Witt.
