There may be one sports season to go before basketball begins but that hasn't kept the Cheney High School girls' team from getting in some preparation over the summer. The Lady Hawks need to replace seven varsity members lost to graduation, and head coach Jennifer Harmer and company took steps in that direction with a busy schedule in June.

Cheney played in both Gonzaga Shootout tournaments, going 4-1 in their final weekend, along with a summer league schedule and a pair of basketball camps at the high school and at Eastern Washington University. The Lady Hawks wrapped up June with a trip to Western Washington to compete in the Chehalis Classic Tournament, placing third overall.

“We played very well and meshed quickly considering this is a brand new team,” Harmer said in an email. “I have a great group of girls who work hard, work together and put team first.”

Harmer added that some of the players also took part along with the Blackhawks football team in the summer weight lifting program at the high school. The Lady Hawks finished last season 11-12 overall, earning the Great Northern League's No. 2 seed and losing to Ephrata in regional action.

Cheney returns three varsity players for the 2012-2013 season: Chae Brown, Coreen Labish and Sami Sheffels. Newcomers playing this past summer were Shyann Morton, Kendyl Cone, Courtney Hartman, Darien Brophy, Kayla Lemelin, Ashia Mundt and Sasha Johnson.
