Spall, Norman compete at Western Zone Senior Championships

Two Cheney swimmers, Makenzie Norman and Heather Spall, traveled to Fresno, Calif. for the Western Zone Senior Championships held at the Clovis North Aquatics Complex Aug. 2 to Aug. 5.

As members of the Spokane-Cheney Waves swim team and proud to represent Inland Empire Swimming, Norman and Spall were among the 778 swimmers who qualified for this meet and joined other swimmers from Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.

Swimming in four events at this meet, 13-year-old Norman experienced a meet of this size for the first time and posted personal best times in both her 50 meter freestyle and 100 freestyle races.

Norman also swam as part of three relay teams that broke Inland Empire Swimming relay records over 20 years old. Record times were posted in the 4x100 freestyle relay, 4x200 freestyle relay and the 4x100 medley relay.

Eighteen-year-old Spall has had a busy summer. After graduating from Cheney High School, she is preparing to go to Whitworth University when school starts again. She will be swimming for Whitworth.

At Western Zones she swam in three events and achieved personal best times in both her 200 butterfly and 800 freestyle race.

“Heather and Makenzie were both great teammates, had a lot of fun and were huge contributors to the fast swimming, relays and fantastic team atmosphere,” coach Kevin Wang said following the event.

Cheney Waves swimmers currently practice Monday through Friday at the Cheney City Pool from 4-6 p.m. Beginning in September the team will move back to the Eastern Washington University Aquatic Center.
