At its June 22 meeting, the board of trustees of Eastern Washington University approved a 3 percent increase to service and activity fees, as well as supplemental changes to the final year of its 2011-2013 budget.

For fiscal year 2013, $1.43 million was added to the $227 million budget. Three million dollars were added to scholarships and fellowships, $3.5 million to auxiliary enterprises and $2.7 million to tuition operating fees. The dedicated local funds line item was reduced by nearly $7 million and the sponsored programs fund was reduced by $2.6 million.

Several spectators missed the general open meeting, which ended before the approximated start time of 1:45 p.m. last Friday. According to supplemental agenda items available on EWU's website, the fees and supplemental budget were the only action items. Other items included in the agenda were:

• President Rodolfo Arévalo reported that 2,925 people were eligible to graduate and between 10,000 and 15,000 people attended commencement ceremonies in Cheney June 16.

• New Faculty Organization president Sam Ligon reported to the board that the Faculty Organization constitution, bylaws, and other policy documents would be reviewed and revised next year in an effort to clarify and update the documents. A committee of faculty had concluded a study on student success and retention, finding that students do best when they have an assigned faculty member for guidance. The committee recommended that EWU start such a program.

• Associated Student president Kaleb Hoffer listed several goals for the 2012-13 school year, including a PUB remodel, interfaith space for faith groups, bringing more services to the Riverpoint campus and expanding library hours.
