If a debate over Cheney's proposed manufactured housing ordinance was any indicator, the final road to implementing the new code figured to be long and bumpy. The Cheney City Council moved the ordinance further towards implementation but expected to make further changes to it.

Airway Heights lost one member of its Planning Commission when long-time member Mark Smith stepped down after six years on the job, including four as chairman. He cited the need to tend to other commitments and not being able to devote proper time to the job as his reason for resigning.

Cheney residents were being urged to continue conserving electrical power by light department director Tom Richardson. California's deregulation efforts and a near-record drought put major stress on the power infrastructure in the Northwest.

Ben Woodard earned a berth on the first-team All Border League squad and coach Denny Humphrey was named Coach of the Year, it was announced during the Cheney Blackhawks' annual basketball awards dinner.

March 21, 1991

With two defeats under their belt, members of the Cheney School Board have decided to back off for a while and study the desires of district patrons before considering a third bond issue. Voters twice turned down ballot issues first seeking $16.4 million in November 1990 and then a $15.3 million request in March. The money was sought for remodeling and additions at district schools.

The long-time spring tradition of a Junior Miss pageant in Cheney ended this year when no local girls signed up for the competition. The pageant dated back to the mid-1960s.

It was hoped the hiring of a prosecuting attorney for the city of Cheney would allow for better and quicker dealings with residents who, “run afoul of the law.” The person selected out of a pool of 10 applicants started work on April 1 in the part-time position.

Despite a 24-3 advantage in shots on goal, the Cheney Blackhawks' lost 2-1 to East Valley in a boys' soccer game in Cheney. Jared Higbee's header at the 15-minute mark was the lone goal for the Hawks.

Matt Giannandrea and Lewis Earl of Medical Lake were named to the Washington State Coach's Association All-State team. Selection criteria included being at least a junior in school and carrying a 3.0 grade-point-average. Giannandrea, a 133-pound competitor and a junior earned a 3.9 GPA while Earl, a 178-pound senior had a GPA of 3.66.

March 19, 1981

Nine Cheney girls were set to compete in Cheney's edition of the Junior Miss Pageant, which was be held at the Fisher Administration Building with a reception in the gymnasium. Kathleen Gildea, Toni Bucsko, Lynda Beavers, Molly Warren, Lynne Frederickson, Mari Rockey, Julie Helgeson, Tamsen Babcock and Elizabeth Kerst vied for the crown.

The 23-year career in education of Jack Philleo, including 15 as principal of Cheney Junior High, came to an end when he retired following the conclusion of the school year.

“There are three major problems facing this school district,” Cheney School Board director Kent Sooy told those at the group's meeting. “One is money, two is discipline and three is drugs.” The board decided to tackle the third issue by implementing a new drug education program.

Five returning lettermen, Doug Malcom, Chip McBride, Bill Hogeboom, Tom Ratel and John Atkinson, were called upon for leadership when the Cheney Blackhawks took on six Greater Spokane League teams in their preseason baseball schedule.

Cheney resident and former wrestling standout Dennis Warren was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame. Warren wrestled at CHS in the late 1960s and then went onto a college career at Central Washington University.
