Governor makes appointments to EWU board

Mays, Kauffman appointed to Eastern Washington University Board of Trustees for five year terms

Dr. Rodolfo Arévalo, Eastern Washington University President, announced March 30 that Dr. Mark Mays, a longtime Spokane resident, clinical psychologist and attorney, has been appointed to the EWU Board of Trustees by Washington Gov. Chris Gregoire.

The governor has also reappointed Jo Ann Kauffman to the board, where she has served as chair for the last two years.

This will be the second time Mays has served on Eastern's Board of Trustees. He previously served on the board from 1997-2003, acting as chair during part of his service. Mays has also been active in numerous community efforts and is a leader in the fields of health care and education.

“I am delighted and honored to once again be a part of the Eastern Washington University community, since every day is a great day to be an Eagle,” Mays said in a press release.

Kauffman, who has been on the board since 2003, is the owner and chief executive of Kauffman & Associates, Inc., a government contracting firm which provides management support, research, program evaluation, social marketing, communications and technology solutions to various agencies of federal, state, tribal and local governments.

“It has been an honor to serve on the EWU Board of Trustees, because EWU is such a quality institution, serving an important need in the region,” Kauffman said in a press release. “I welcome Dr. Mays back to the board and look forward to his involvement as we tackle the tough issues ahead, protecting higher education funding, securing academic excellence and ensuring student success - especially for the many first generation students we see at Eastern.”

The trustees work with President Arévalo to set strategic direction for EWU, serve as advocates for Eastern and help ensure that the university is academically and financially accountable and successful.

Mays' and Kauffman's appointments are effective immediately, and their terms run through Sept. 30, 2015.
