The Cheney boys finished in the middle of the Great Northern League pack with an 8-7 record and a big 6-1 win over Riverside last week.

“It was much better than the first time we played them,” coach Jesse Erickson said of the Rams. “We got a little revenge on them.”

Experience and tenacity were the keys to reversing the 2-5 decisions against the Rams back on April 12, Erickson said, adding that he got good performances from his players from across the board on May 9.

At No. 1 singles, Joe Kreilkamp had “no trouble at all,” Erickson said, against Steve Crites and got a 6-1, 6-0 victory.

Kale Kauwe, the Hawks' No. 2, got off to a shaky start against Minh Layne in the first set ,7-6 (7-5), but started attacking the serve and came away with a 6-0 win in the second to come out on top.

It took three sets to come to a conclusion in Chris Mock's No. 3 throw-down with Eric Sager, but came away the 2-6, 7-5, 6-0 winner.

“Chris had a real tough match,” Erickson said. “He started getting some success once he started attacking the net.”

At No. 4 singles, David Olson had zero problems against Ram Danny Hartzell, securing the 6-0, 6-0 win in straight sets.

In doubles play, Layne Bennett and Tanner Bennett had “one of their hardest matches of the season) against Riverside's competitive Jeremy Hebert and Shane Lipstein.

While the battle could have gone either way, the Hawks came away on the bottom end of a 6-7 (10-12), 4-6 decision.

Jess Plowman and Michael Fisher teamed at No. 2 doubles for the Hawks and also had a tough one against Rams Austin Giles and Tony Accardo. This one went to the Hawks, 7-6 (12-10), 6-0.

At No. 3 doubles, Cheney's Aaron Pollack and Joe Grant had little difficulty with Scott Daubel and Jordan Powell, winning 6-0, 6-1.

Districts begin Friday in Clarkston and continue the following day at Clarkston.

From there, the top three singles and top three doubles teams move on to the 2A state tournament the following weekend at the Yakima Tennis Club.
