Cheney Legion unit gives quilt to Spokane VA Hospital

The American Legion Auxiliary, Department of Washington, proposed the Veterans Passage Project “Quilt from the Heart.”

Each unit in the state was requested to provide at least one quilt for use at their local VA hospital.

These red, white and blue quilts are given in honor of the veteran when the veteran passes away. The quilt is used to cover the veteran until they are taken to the mortuary.

At the time the quilt is folded and placed at the foot of the veteran's bed with a candle to be lit in their memory. The quilt is then passed on to a family member in honor of the deceased veteran.

This quilt “Stars and Stripes” was designed and made by Phyllis Mitzel, a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 72 of Cheney. Bonnie Swannack of Lamont quilted it.

The quilt will be presented to Eva Wallace, the Department of Washington VA&R chair on March 31 at the District Conference in Cusick, Wash., and will be used at Spokane VA Hospital.
