Small-town gymnasts, big-city performances

The girls from Mountain View Gymnastics in Airway Heights competed in the Palouse Invitational meet at the University of Idaho on Saturday, Feb. 3.

Danielle Bauge, Sara Goemmel and Heidi Pitman performed well enough for qualifying scores to their respective state and sectional gymnastics meets this spring.

Having put up two previous qualifying scores, these three products of local small towns put together their finest routines and gave themselves their best all-around finishes of the year.

Bauge, a student at Cheney Middle School, competed well in individual events by taking third place on the uneven bars, second place on the balance beam and fifth place in floor exercises.

When the all-around medals were presented, Bauge took the well-respected third position on the podium.

Goemmel, who attends Reardan Junior High School, was able to compile enough points to again qualify for state sectional competition.

At the Palouse Invitational, she placed second on the uneven bars, third on the balance beam and sixth in floor exercises.

Those marks were good enough for fifth place in the all-around standings.

Pitman, a resident of Davenport, is another one of the dedicated gymnasts that have to travel long distances every week for practices.

The time was well worth it for Pitman, as her final all-around score of 36.3 gave her the gold medal.

Being from Davenport, Pitman is another one of those dedicated gymnasts that must travel fairly long distances every week to practices.

The time spent was well worth it for Pitman on Feb. 3 as she found herself on the winner's podium for the individual events.

When her final all-around score of 36.3 was compared to the others she had earned the first place gold medal.

These three small-town products are examples of dedication, talent and love for a technically difficult sport.

Gymnastics is an activity that requires year-round practice and extreme motivation in order to compete at a high level.

The Mountain View girls represent the youth of today that are strong, both physically and mentally, and display a degree of poise and confidence that are the ingredients of a well-rounded student-athlete.
