    Led by quarterback Gage Gubrud who was making his first start, the Eagles stunned the Cougars 45-42 back on Sept. 3, 2016 at Martin Stadium. The Eagles and Cougars meet Sept. 15 in a rematch. This is only the fifth game in a series that began over a century ago and heavily favored Washington State College in its infancy where they won 46-0 in 1907 and 73-0 a year later.     On Monday, Aug. 6, a series of fires were started along Interstate 90 between Cheney and Medical Lake. Ultimately called the Silver Lake, as of Thurs., Aug. 9 the blaze was listed at having consumed 340 acres of timber, grass and farm land.     Over three-dozen members of the special needs community in the area had their special day prior to the final performance of the 51st annual Cheney Rodeo on July 15 as the Rascal Rodeo made its appearance at the Bi Mart Arena. Each participant likely got to experience something they may never have before and received cowboy hats and bandannas and a special belt buckle from Northwest Farm Credit Services of Cheney.   • Defense dominates Red-White

    After a quick start by the White Team offense with a pair of early touchdowns, defense took over to dominate and shut out Team Red 17-0 in the annual Red-White Scrimmage April 28 at Roos Field. Team White's Zach Eagle got his team's first score, plus enough receiving and return yardage and was awarded the Iron Eagle award.     Eastern Washington University ROTC cadets had the unique opportunity to depart from the Cheney campus to the Seven Mile area of the Spokane River for the annual two-day field training exercise via an Army National Guard CH-47 Chinook helicopter.     In a game shortened due to the 15-run rule at home April 18, Medical Lake crushed Riverside 16-1. The Cardinals came out with hot bats. "We had 17 hits, five for extra bases," head coach Tim Blakely said. Taylor Carpenter had two doubles, a triple and six RBIs, plus she pitched a three-hitter and struck out five.... Full story
