The Lady Blackhawks and Indians exchanged leads several times in the first half. After NC took an 18-12 advantage, Hannah Lemelin's 3-pointer pulled Cheney within one at 18-17 before the Lady Blackhawks shooting touch went as cold as the...

  • What a wild and rewarding year it was for area sports in 2017

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Dec 28, 2017

What an interesting year we are about to complete in West Plains sports. OK, and the country, too. It was a time of both upheaval with the departure of two of the area’s biggest coaching names, Eastern Washington University’s Beau Baldwin in football and Jim Hayford in men’s basketball. It was a year of notable accomplishments in Medical Lake where basketball excelled and cross country continued the dominance it has experienced since the arrival of head coach Gene Blank...

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Dec 28, 2017

There was plenty to see at the 50th edition of the Cheney Rodeo that completed its run this past July at the Bi-Mart Arena. Problem was just not as many eyes as usual watched over the three days of the milestone year event, according to the sponsoring organization's Cheney Events Association president, Rick Edwards. "We are still counting and tying down numbers," Edwards wrote in an email. He followed up on that during a later interview, saying that, "We were a little light...

  • Medical Lake girls fade in loss to La Salle

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Dec 28, 2017

The pressure hung heavy on freshman Jayda Noble as she stepped to the free throw line with 1 second remaining in her team's 1A regional game against LaSalle and Medical Lake trailing 47-45 Febraury 25 in the Cheney High School gym. When the first foul shot clanked off the rim, then the tears welled in her eyes because it meant the Cinderella season for the Cardinals had the wheel fall off the carriage on the way to the state championship ball. But it wasn't that miss, nor the...

Almost 60 hours later, Cheney High boys track and field head coach Derek Slaughter still couldn't believe it. "It's surreal," Slaughter said Tuesday afternoon about his Blackhawk boys accomplishments at state last weekend. "It still hasn't sunk in yet." The Cheney boys tied Ridgefield with 48 points to earn a share of the 2A state championship at competition May 25 – 27 at Mount Tahoma High School in Lakewood. The Blackhawk girls weren't far back either, tying Ellensburg w...
