  • Cheney boys rally to top Lakeside 65-62

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Dec 28, 2012

The Cheney High boys basketball team rallied from a five-point deficit heading into the fourth quarter at Lakeside and overcame a last-second shot to force overtime to knock off the Rams 65-62 last Wednesday. Cheney led by two at the break but a cold shooting third quarter gave the Rams the five point advantage heading into the final eight minutes, where the Blackhawks led by Najib Rehman, Eric Igbinoba and Theo Petropoulos rallied for a two-point lead. Lakeside’s Connor Moffatt hit a short jumper to force overtime where C...

  • Lady Hawks fall to talented Reardan team, resume play Dec. 26

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Dec 28, 2012

It may be that the Reardan Indians are the best team the Cheney High girls basketball squad will see this season. The defending 2B state champions were too disciplined, too skilled on both sides of the ball and in the end too much for the Lady Hawks last Friday night, holding Cheney to single digit scoring in three of the four quarters en route to a 59-33 win. The Indians took a 17-8 lead after one quarter, and stretched that to 24-8 before Cheney sophomore post Coreen Labish...

  • Colville takes easy 66-18 GNL wrestling win over Cheney

    James Eik, Staff Reporter|Updated Dec 28, 2012

By JAMES EIK Staff Reporter After a bright start, Cheney’s Wednesday, Dec. 19 wrestling match against Colville took a turn for the worst. Cheney began strong, winning with three straight pins. Cameron Schlotter (195 pounds) pinned Colville’s Brock Vanquekelbert in 1:39, followed by Zach Corean (220) pinning Keegan Somers in 3:34 and Noah Ziemann (285) pinning Jedidiah Keating in 1:31. “We started off pretty well,” head coach Wade Schlotter said. “Then it kind of fell apart for us.” After those first three Cheney pins, Colvill...

  • Cardinal boys on top of NEA standings at Christmas break

    Paul Delaney, Staff Reporter|Updated Dec 28, 2012

The view so far is pretty nice from the top of the Northeast A League boys’ basketball standings for Medical Lake. Following wins last week, Tuesday by a 65-36 score at Kettle Falls and then 38-31 over visiting Freeman last Friday, the Cardinals share the top spot with Chewelah with 3-0 records as the league takes a Christmas break. Medical Lake, 5-3 overall, broke open a game they led just 15-14 after the opening quarter by holding the Bulldogs (0-3, 4-5) to single-digit s...

  • Looking back at some lesser known events from 2012

    Paul Delaney, Staff Reporter|Updated Dec 28, 2012

The story usually starts with the small talk in the barber chair and the stylist asking, among other things, “So you have any big plans for the weekend?” The deadpan response is generally, “Well I have to work,” to which the hair cutter offers the, “Aw, that’s to bad.” But the punch line goes something like: “Yeah, I’ve got to ‘work’ photographing a football or basketball game and then write about what I saw.” That doesn’t sound like work, the stylist says between snip...

  • Reuter’s heroics saves day for Eagles

    Paul Delaney, Staff Reporter|Updated Dec 28, 2012

On a day when the offense struggled against a smothering man-on-man Idaho State defense, it was a clutch defensive stop of their own that saved the Eastern Washington University men’s basketball team from a devastating loss. Freshman European import Thomas Reuter came up with a huge block on one end and then converted a pair of free throws on the other to secure a 57-54 Big Sky Conference win over the Bengals Saturday afternoon at Reese Court. The win evened the Eagles’ confer...

  • Eastern women get rare win at Idaho State

    Paul Delaney, Staff Reporter|Updated Dec 28, 2012

The Eastern Washington University women’s basketball team got to open a couple of presents early with two Big Sky Conference wins. One was bigger than the other, the Eagles’ 61-55 win Saturday at defending conference champion Idaho State, while the other, an 88-60 thumping of Weber State Thursday in Ogden, Utah left them 2-0 in league play and 5-5 overall. With sophomore point guard Kylie Huerta tossing in a career-high 15 points at Reed Gym in Pocatello, the Eagles won for...

  • Grapefruit + Medications = Potential Problem

    Dr E Kirsten Peters, Contributor|Updated Dec 28, 2012

We Americans are often told to eat more fruits and vegetables. Particularly this time of year, when New Year’s resolutions are still in strong force, a lot of us are trying to do better about what we eat. A breakfast of half a grapefruit and some peanut butter on a piece of toast sounds like it would be good for you, doesn’t it? For millions of Americans who take prescription drugs, the answer may be no – such a breakfast might even be quite problematic for your health. The difficulty arises because of certain effects in the...

  • A joyful Merry Christmas

    Luella Dow, Contributor|Updated Dec 28, 2012

There are those of us who try very hard to remove the word “Christmas” from our vocabulary because we have been told it will offend someone. Christmas simply means Christ Mass. Is that offensive? Why has Christmas been chosen as offensive when vulgar expressions grow ever more popular and must be endured? A long time ago Mr. Webster placed Mass on a middle page of his dictionary as “the liturgy of the Eucharist.” He explained liturgy as a form of public worship, a ritual. Eucharist, he said, meant the sacrament of Holy Co...

  • Learning from the ‘apocalypse’

    Joe Conason, Columnist|Updated Dec 28, 2012

What may finally consume the House Republicans is their boundless contempt for the American public — a contempt bluntly demonstrated in their refusal to consider any reasonable compromise with President Obama to avoid the so-called “fiscal cliff” on Dec. 31. They know from the election results (and every poll) that the public believes taxes should be raised on the wealthy. They know that the public wants bipartisan compromise. And they know that the approval rating of the House Republicans, in contrast to the presi...

  • Beaten, bloodied and fried, Seattle Mariners fans remain the best

    James Eik, Staff Reporter|Updated Dec 28, 2012

I’m not really allowed on the sports pages of the paper too often, and for good reason. But, I do have one sports passion in this world: baseball. I’m no statistician, or sabermetrics genius, but I do follow players’ stats pretty closely. And, despite their seemingly continuous struggles since 2003, I’m still an ardent Mariners fan. The team has put together signs of hope in recent years, but none of it panned out. 2007 was a fluke, as was 2009. But, despite a losing record last year, it truly looks like the ship is back on c...

  • Free Press to unveil Top Stories of 2012 in first January issue

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Dec 28, 2012

Cheney Free Press readers will notice something a little different in their Jan. 3, 2013 issue. Instead of doing an annual, two-part recap of the year’s stories, our “Year in Review” we have instead decided to do the “Top Stories of 2012.” The Free Press editorial staff has discussed and debated the events of the past year and come up with a list of the three stories we felt were the most important in the areas of community news, education and sports. There’s no real science to how we came up with the stories we did, but we t...

  • Not a question of if, but a matter of when

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Dec 28, 2012

Cheney School District and local police agency officials hope they have taken sufficient steps and precautions to prevent a school-shooting incident similar to what happened Dec. 14 in Newtown, Conn., and if the unthinkable happens, practiced procedures that would lead to a successful response. Since 2008, Cheney and Airway Heights police have been participants in shooter-hostage mock training exercises at Eastern Washington University that include other agencies such as the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office, EWU police, W...

  • Policy allows staff to use personal devices

    James Eik, Staff Reporter|Updated Dec 28, 2012

Teachers in the Medical Lake School District are now approved to bring their own personal electronic devices for use on the district’s Internet servers. At the school board meeting, Tuesday, Dec. 18, Superintendent Pam Veltri noted that this was just part of the changing of the times. “That’s the main change we were talking about, with staff,” she said. The district’s technology department would need to make sure the personal device is up to date with antivirus software before use in the school. Part of the Science, Technolog...

  • Supporting the community is priority for chaplains

    James Eik, Staff Reporter|Updated Dec 28, 2012

In an emergency, police and fire departments are the first things that come to mind. But, like many cities, Airway Heights has a group of chaplains who can provide help in emergencies, offering an extended arm of support for fellow residents. The city’s chaplains are on call for any situation that may arise from the city’s police or fire department. They are there to help provide support for victims and work with them to develop a plan for contacting family or other emergency contacts. In addition, Airway Heights’ chapl...

  • Cheney City Council concludes 2012 business – quickly

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Dec 28, 2012

Cheney’s City Council meeting Thursday Dec. 20 set a record that might stand for quite a while. At one minute, 44 seconds it was likely the shortest council meeting ever held, with only one item addressed before adjournment – paying the bills. The meeting had been moved from its normal fourth Tuesday of the month, which this December falls on Christmas Day, to last Thursday by council vote at the Nov. 27 meeting. However the city issued a “Notice of Meeting Continuation” to reconvene the Dec. 11 meeting, something Mayor T...

  • Sending a message from West Plains to Olympia

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Dec 28, 2012

Streamlining business communication, protecting Fairchild Air Force Base, reforming the state’s labor and industry insurance and developing equal opportunity K-12 education that includes business partners and entrepreneurship. These are the top-four of many ideas a group of West Plains business, civic and education leaders presented 6th District state Rep. Kevin Parker with at an informal lunch discussion Thursday, Dec. 20, at Spokane International Airport’s Ramada Inn. Billed as “100 Ideas Luncheon with Kevin Parker” the eve...

  • Deja vu: Medical Lake lives within its means

    James Eik, Staff Reporter|Updated Dec 28, 2012

By JAMES EIK Staff Reporter With another year’s budget placed in the books, Medical Lake can rest easy for a while. As has been the case for a number of years, the city has put together a balanced budget with revenues remaining, for the large part, somewhat stagnant. Next year’s general fund expenditures come in at $2,903,148, a drop of over $100,000 from this year’s $3.071 million budget. Revenues from the state have decreased, and contracts for work performed in the city, like road maintenance and utility work, aren’t becom...

  • Opportunity knocks for Cheney with plunge pool

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Dec 28, 2012

By JOHN McCALLUM Editor Sometimes when chasing one opportunity another, possibly better one, comes along. Such is the case with the city of Cheney’s potential, but nowhere certain, purchase of a 15.02 acre piece of property southwest of the city between Badger and Williams lakes roads that would allow access to the northern portion of what’s referred to as the Williams Lake Plunge Pool. Part of that opportunity stems from Cheney being a Let’s Move! City, which has opened many doors, Parks and Recreation Director Paul Simmo...

  • JLUS moves step closer to reality

    James Eik, Staff Reporter|Updated Dec 28, 2012

The document, which passed the City Council earlier in the week, establishes a set of protective measures for Fairchild Air Force Base in order to ensure the surrounding land use is compatible with the base’s mission. Col. Brian Newberry, Commander of the 92nd Air Refueling Wing said one of the first things he heard about when starting his job fou...
