The Cardinals earned wins in the first three bouts, beginning with Ethan Davis’s 4-1 decision at 138 pounds over Kaden Mackowiak. Josh Figuerdo (145) topped Gage Smith 8-2 and Brayden Peteren defeated Joe Dreiszus 12-5. Chewelah would collect the next three matches as Dylan Walser won an 11-3 major decision over Nate Stevens at 160 pounds. Kaden K...

    Grace Pohl, Staff Intern|Updated Dec 21, 2017

The Cheney High School wrestling team earned its first league win last week on Dec. 13 against Pullman. The 51-25 victory also marked the first home match of the season. “It was great,” head coach Brad Rasmussen said. “It is always fun to wrestle at home in front of your friends and family. With the young team, I didn’t know how we would do going into the match, but we came out and we battled well.” The freshmen on the team seemed to take control, collecting four of the six wins. Freshmen Jase Winner and Dylan Straley g...

  • Medical Lake boys earn split in games before break

    Updated Dec 21, 2017

By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter If there is anything that Medical Lake head boys basketball coach Noel Hachtel might want for Christmas that cannot be found at a store or online, it might be how to cure inconsistency. That was what dogged his Cardinals last week in a split of Northeast A League contests that included a 72-47 win at home against Chewelah and a 49-44 road loss to Deer Park. Medical Lake takes the Christmas break off with a 3-1 NEA record and are 4-3 overall. They were to have played Kellogg on Dec. 13 but the...

  • Blackhawks earn first back-to-back hard court wins

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Dec 21, 2017

Cheney High boys basketball head coach Gregg Smith wants his team to set short-term obtainable goals rather than long-term lofty aspirations. One of those last week was winning back-to-back games, which the Blackhawks did with a convincing 59-30 win at East Valley last Friday to even their Great Northern League mark at 1-1. Three days earlier, Cheney had pulled a mild upset on the road at Idaho 5A classification Lake City, using a 23-point third quarter to propel them to a come-from-behind 58-43 win over the Vikings. Cheney...

The Cheney High School gymnastics team completed their second meet of the season and finished third overall with 155.325 points. The Blackhawks competed against Central Valley, who took first with 165.700 points, along with Lewis and Clark, Mt. Spokane and Rogers. “The girls did great and do a great job supporting each other through the highs and lows of the meet,” head coach Jamie Frucci said. “They did a great job of not letting challenges on previous events affect their performance on events that followed.” Sophia VanWorm...

  • Cooper Kupp's return to Washington was a success

    Grace Pohl, Staff Intern|Updated Dec 21, 2017

Even though the star wide receiver from Eastern Washington University may have not had as many receptions as he would’ve hoped, Cooper Kupp still found success on and off the field as he returned to the state of Washington against the Seattle Seahawks on Dec. 17. I was fortunate enough to be able to travel over the mountains last weekend to watch Kupp play again and I was not the only one to make the trip for the former Eagle. I wondered if I would be one of the only ones representing Kupp in a No. 18 Los Angeles Rams jersey,...

  • Blackhawk swimmers enter break with good league mark

The Blackhawks opened with a pair of wins at Lions Pool in Yakima on Dec. 2, defeating the host Prosser Mustangs 80-69 and a shorthanded Grandview team 117-11. Cheney followed that with competition Dec. 9 again at Lions Pool, losing to the host Selah Vikings 110-50 but earning wins over Toppenish, 98-54, and East Valley-Yakima, 96-65. The Blackhawks...

  • Cardinal girls keep things perfect

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Dec 21, 2017

Medical Lake's girls basketball team has found yet another weapon in what is turning out to be an impressive arsenal. Sophomore Lexie Redell led all scorers with 22 points in the Cardinals 65-33 pounding of Chewelah in a Northeast A League game Dec. 12 and then put up another 16 last Friday in a 77-20 dismantling of Deer Park. The results leave Medical Lake undefeated, 3-0 in the NEA and 6-0 overall heading into the Christmas break. A nonleague meeting with Kellogg on Dec. 13...

  • Finally flying at home

    PAUL DELANEY|Updated Dec 21, 2017

After nearly 40 days on the road since their last home game, Eastern Washington's Jacob Davison got to enjoy playing at Reese Court, seen here driving to the basket in the Eagles' 86-58 win over the Matadors. Five Eastern players scored in double figures. Bogdan Bliznyuk, the only player in school history to have recorded a triple-double, came three assists shy of matching that to finish with 16 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists. Jesse Hunt sank 6 of 8 shots to finish...

  • Christmas in Thailand was certainly one to remember

    FRANK WATSON, Contributor|Updated Dec 21, 2017

I am getting to the age where young folks ask me about my best and most memorable Christmas. They are not the same. My most memorable one wasn’t my best, but it is the one I think of most often. I had completed Air Force flight training and was assigned to an air refueling crew at Fairchild Air Force Base. After a few short months, our crew was notified that we would depart in mid-December for a short tour in Southeast Asia as part of the Vietnam conflict. We were excited and anticipating a great adventure. We hadn’t yet dis...

  • Million Wreaths Across America honors our fallen veterans

    DON C. BRUNELL, Contributor|Updated Dec 21, 2017

Christmas is an especially difficult time for anyone grieving for lost loved ones. It is especially painful for America’s military families whose son, daughter, spouse or parent was killed while serving in uniform. Normally, the fallen are remembered on Memorial Day, but thanks to a Maine family and over hundreds of thousand donors and volunteers, more than 1.5 million wreaths were laid on the tombstones of our fallen soldiers, sailors and airmen on Dec. 16. The panoramic v...

  • So many questions remain after Amtrak crash

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Dec 21, 2017

So much for sharing about grandma Ehlers’ molasses chocolate chip spice cookies. News of the deadly Amtrak crash near Olympia on Monday morning changed a lot of plans. No one who boarded the run in Seattle envisioned what lie ahead, or if they would be one of the statistics in the state’s first-ever fatal Amtrak accident. The Amtrak Cascades train was supposed to celebrate a new and faster route between Seattle and Portland, but it seemed few cared. Just 80 people were on boa...

    Dr. TIM THAYNE, Contributor|Updated Dec 21, 2017

The holidays arrive and with them come those endless lists of gifts to buy, decorations to put up and parties to attend. Meeting all the demands can place a lot of stress on a married couple's relationship, but it doesn't need to be that way. "We all want our holidays to be magical and perfect, but the reality doesn't always meet the expectations," says Dr. Tim R. Thayne, a marriage and family therapist and author of Not by Chance: How Parents Boost Their Teen's Success In...
