MEN’S BASKETBALL Eastern nearly pulls off upset at Wyoming Eastern Washington nearly had the other bookend to their epic Nov. 14 Stanford win. The Eagles’ men’s basketball team ended its 10-game road stretch with an impressive showing, but Wyoming rallied from a six-point deficit with 33 seconds left in regulation to prevail 93-88 in overtime Dec. 12. Eastern led for 35:14 in the game, compared to just 6:52 for the Cowboys. “Everything they had in the tank they emptied today,” Eastern head coach Shantay Legans said. “It...

  • Medical Lake wrestlers battle to the end at Deer Park

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Dec 14, 2017

Medical Lake wrestling coach Matt Leenhouts boasted that his Cardinals could challenge Northeast A League juggernaut Deer Park for a championship. If so, there’s still some work to be done after the two teams met in their NEA opener Dec. 7 in Deer Park where the Stags won 45-30. The Cardinals began the night in a 12-0 hole when Weston Dean at 170 pounds and Caden Boswell (182) scored victories by pins over ML’s Liam Lonam and XX Bridges. “I think we were a little nervo...

  • Cardinal boys win pair

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Dec 14, 2017

Derek Steege has flown under the radar his entire career as a Medical Lake basketball player. That ended last week for the senior shooting guard, who rocketed onto the scene Dec. 5 when he scored 30 points to lead his team to a 57-56 nonleague victory over Davenport. But Steege was not finished. Last Friday, he led the Cardinals with 13 points in a 46-41 Northeast A League win over Riverside and capped it with 11 more in a 75-51 nonleague loss to Lakeland in Rathdrum, Idaho....

  • Money hampers enlarging college football playoffs

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Dec 14, 2017

If it’s December — which it is — and it’s my turn in the Crunch Time rotation — right again — then it’s time for the annual review of the college football bowl season. That’s NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision, for you literalists. This year there are 37 postseason bowls, with 74 teams total competing for prize money for their schools and, more importantly, their conferences. At least I think there are 74 teams, that would make sense mathematically. Thirty-seven times two equals 74. After counting and counting until everythin...

  • Medical Lake girls get help from the usual cast to stay unbeaten

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Dec 14, 2017

The usual cast of characters made the contributions they were expected to provide for the Medical Lake girls basketball team last week. That equaled perfection for the Cardinals who improved to 1-0 in Northeast A League play and 4-0 overall. ML wins came 46-43 over Davenport in a nonleague game, 67-25 over Riverside in their NEA opener and 56-32 in Rathdrum against Lakeland in another nonleague outing. Medical Lake played Dec. 12 at home against Chewelah (0-0, 1-0), hosted...

  • Lady Blackhawks rally for GNL-opening win over West Valley

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Dec 14, 2017

The halftime locker room talk head coach Lorin Carlon gave his Cheney High girls basketball last Friday against West Valley kept the Lady Blackhawks from warming up for the final 16 minutes - and almost earned them a technical foul for coming out late. It was a necessity, Carlon said. "I hadn't done this before in Cheney, but I'm going to see if I can really, really make them mad," he said Monday morning. Carlon didn't insult his players, but rather challenged them to make...

  • Blackhawks lose buzzer-beater to West Valley

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Dec 14, 2017

This one will hurt for a little bit. After leading by as much as 13 points against visiting West Valley, the Cheney High boys basketball team looked like it had fought off a furious rally by the Great Northern League pre-season title favorites - only to fall 57-55 last Friday night on a buzzer-beating layin by Eagles' senior Connor Whitney. The Blackhawks did everything right in the first half, and indeed for most of the game. Camden VerStrate and Kaiden Custer hit back-to-bac...

  • Where's Trump's resignation?

    Updated Dec 14, 2017

I don’t want to insult anybody’s intelligence, but still feel compelled to state the obvious: If U.S. congressional members are forced to resign by sexual harassment charges, what about our president? Congressional Democrats have generally been willing to force resignations, including those of their own offending party members. But considerably more pressure is required by congressional Republicans to effect the president’s resignation. Unfortunately, as pointed out in a prominent Eastern Washington newspaper’s 12/7/17...
