    Runners of all ages turned out for the ninth annual Cheney High School Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving. The event was put on by the Cross Country booster club.     Eastern Washington hit the shots when they needed to late, making up for the ones that didn't fall early, rallying to earn a 96-90 men's basketball win over the University of San Francisco last Sunday, Nov. 27 at Reese Court. With the victory also came an unofficial title in the Eastern Classic following Saturday's 85-80 overtime win over the University of Denver.     With Jacob Wiley getting red hot and scoring 20 points after being held scoreless in the first half, Eastern Washington scored an 80-76 double-overtime win over Seattle University in the consolation championship of the Legends Classic at Reese Court Nov. 22. The Eagles got key baskets from Bogdan Bliznyuk at the end of regulation and Cody Benzel in the first overtime to force the deciding second extra session. Read the full story here....

    Hodgins earns Big Sky honors Eastern Washington University women’s basketball player Delaney Hodgins was named the College Sports Madness Big Sky Player of the Week after posting a pair of 20-point performances to help the Eagles go a perfect 2-0 last week.     Cheney High School’s girls and boys varsity cross country teams competed in the Nike Cross Northwest Regional Qualifier Nov. 12 at Eagle Island State Park in Boise, Idaho. The Blackhawks were among 1,700 runners from Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Utah, Montana, Wyoming, Alaska and Hawaii competing in the event.     Phoebe R. Smith, 89, passed away on Nov. 19, 2016 at her home in Cheney. Phoebe was born in Lincoln, Neb. on Sept. 2, 1927 to Everett and Lena (Schee) Pringle. She lived in Denver, Colo. where her family farmed and after graduating high school in Denver she went to Seattle where she met and married Bill Smith at the age of 18.
