    Luella Dow, Contributor|Updated Nov 27, 2013

How does a person decide a life’s career? Then in an accident he broke his left elbow. Professional pianist? Maybe not. Another accident robbed him of some front teeth that sent him to a dentist. Martinssen said, “I like the work he did. But, I thou...

  • The United States Postal Service is limping along

    Updated Nov 27, 2013

This editorial first appeared in the Nov. 20 edition of The Orange County Register. Forgive us if we don’t think it’s cause for celebration that the U.S. Postal Service on Friday, Nov. 15 reported a $5 billion net loss for its 2013 fiscal year – “a significant improvement over last year,” as our friends at the New York Times generously characterized it. No, a $5 billion net loss isn’t as horrific as the record $15.9 billion loss the USPS posted in 2012. But it’s still pretty darn terrible. And it marks the seventh strai...

  • Eastern women fall at Gonzaga, hit road for Vegas

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Nov 27, 2013

Eastern Washington knew going into their non-conference women's basketball game last Wednesday at McCarthy Center in Spokane against No. 25 Gonzaga that they were giving up a height advantage. However, Eagles' coach Wendy Schuller knew her team had ways to counter. But Eastern didn't go to their Plan-B, either, falling 78-58 and seeing their record dipped to 0-3. Gonzaga (3-1) proved tough on Eastern's outside shooting, did a good job in the paint and forced the Eagles into...

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Nov 27, 2013

It was a game where one team had everything to gain, and the other nothing to lose. In the end the script played out in almost unimaginable fashion for both. In the span of the final 1 minute, 44 seconds, Eastern Washington had to score twice, watch a Portland State extra point fail and then survive the game's final play where the Vikings got the ball to the EWU 23 with a pass play and series of laterals with no time remaining in order to claim a 42-41 Big Sky Conference...

  • Art journey - Fourth annual Slightly West of Spokane Artists Studio Tour this Saturday

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Nov 27, 2013

Cheney-area artists Janet Wilbanks and Judy McKeehan hope they're on a roll when it comes to this Saturday's Slightly West of Spokane Artists Studio Tour – at least as far as weather is concerned. After a major, early-season snowfall hampered the tour's debut in 2010, the annual artists' showcase has enjoyed nice, sunny if crisp November weather the past two years, helping attendance greatly. But even that first challenge in 2010 didn't keep art patrons and others from e...

    JAMES EIK, Staff Reporter|Updated Nov 27, 2013

Voters turned down Spokane County Proposition 1 on Tuesday, Nov. 5, defeating it by 51.2 percent, leaving many questions hanging in the balance. Proposition 1 would have raised $18 million in property taxes over nine years to buy mobile home parks in Accident Potential Zone Two, an identified encroachment to Fairchild Air Force Base. Residents living in the area would have been relocated and the parks demolished, allowing the land to be transformed for industrial use. Without those funds, however, there won’t be much a...
