Sophomore Anthony Vitto had...

  • Budget discussion falls silent on tax rates of the rich

By RYAN LANCASTER Staff Reporter Both Democrats and Republicans are leaving one important element out of the emotionally charged budget discussion now taking place, namely that our nation is far from broke. A report issued last fall by the Credit Suisse Research Institute revealed that overall individual wealth in the United States has risen 23 percent since 2000, to $236,213 per adult. That money isn't evenly divided among us, of course. If it were I'd be able to afford a more comfortable office chair. In reality, the...

  • Letters to the Editor

Is parking a good use for the old Cheney Middle School? A deep sadness overtook me after reading the recent article in the Cheney Free Press on the start of the new middle school construction. I was remembering the start of school over 30-plus years ago. As a new eighth-grader I was going to the brand new Cheney Junior High (Middle School). As a young teen, I compared it to the Fisher Building that I was leaving as a seventh-grader. What a grand new building. Not the old brick building with the gym surrounded by classrooms. T...

  • Lady Hawk ugly: Cheney sweeps M. Lake

By JOHN McCALLUM Editor In describing game one of last Saturday's Cheney-Medical Lake softball doubleheader Lady Hawks head coach Gary Blake put things as delicately as possible. “That was probably one of the ugliest games I've ever been in,” the Lady Hawks skipper said Monday night. Six Cheney errors in the first three innings coupled with walks and opportune Medical Lake hitting gave the Lady Cards a 10-3 lead. It was a lead they could not hold once Cheney settled down defensively and the bats warmed up, outscoring Med...

  • In Our Opinion: County Commissioners failing on new jail

With the news this month that the Spokane County Commissioners are backing off their push to rezone the land and get a bond vote for a new jail in the West Plains, now seems like a good time to zoom out and take a look at this situation as a whole. A new jail is needed—the Geiger Corrections Center is crowded and dilapidated, a hazard for inmates and workers alike. But that's about where our agreement with the commissioners ends. The commissioners, our elected leaders, have acted irresponsibly throughout this process, most n...
