  • Cardinals cruise to district title at Chewelah

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Nov 7, 2014

The Medical Lake Cardinals are not only on a roll as they head to Pasco this Saturday to defend their state 1A cross country championship, but arguably their best runner is too. Fresh off a convincing victory at district competition Oct. 30 at Chewelah Golf Club, senior Micah Dingfield is running his best, Cards' head coach Gene Blankenship said. Medical Lake scored a 23-47 win over Riverside with both schools earning team berths at state, staged at the 5,000-meter Sun...

  • EWU quarterback question has no immediate answers

    Paul Delaney, Staff Reporter|Updated Nov 6, 2014

Beau Baldwin the gambler/football coach is playing some of his best poker in the lead up to the visit to Cheney of the Montana Grizzlies for their annual Big Sky Conference football showdown. Kickoff is 12:10 p.m. in the game at maxed out — not just sold out — Roos Field. Root Sports will televise the game live. Baldwin, who will more often than not dial up a daring play to convert a fourth-down when others might choose to punt or kick a field goal, is not showing his car...

  • Eastern has it easy against North Dakota in 54-3 victory

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Nov 6, 2014

North Dakota, the team without a nickname, also came to Cheney and Roos Field without any answers, too. UND could not contend with a relentless Eastern Washington defense nor a potent offense as the Eagles rolled to a 54-3 Big Sky Conference football victory last Saturday making the soggy Homecoming crowd of 9,212 happy by sending most home early. "We had everyone in Spokane wanting to walk off a ledge with the first Big Sky loss," Eastern head coach Beau Baldwin said. "Our...

  • Big plays lead to Blackhawks' rout of Pullman

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Nov 6, 2014

Running back Ty Graham scored three touchdowns, tight end Keenan Williams added two more and the Cheney High football team got some big plays from its defense and special teams as the Blackhawks whipped visiting Pullman 45-21 on Halloween night in Great Northern League action. Despite the win, Cheney, 2-2 GNL and 6-3 overall, will miss the playoffs, having needed a West Valley win at Clarkston to set up a three-way tie with the Bantams and East Valley and possible tiebreaker...

  • What will you do for money? Certainly not a real college football playoff

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Nov 6, 2014

If you’re looking for people that are really excited about the inaugural College Football Playoffs (CFP), don’t look my way. I love college football, all shapes, sizes, colors and divisions of college football. It’s one of the most perfect ways to spend a fall, Saturday afternoon, no matter if you’re sitting in the stands or doing stuff around the house — with all three TVs blaring three different games. For most of college football divisions, each game can bring the excitement not only of a win, sometimes against a hated r...

  • What does traffic congestion mean to you?

    Updated Nov 6, 2014

Spokane is no Seattle or Portland — and that’s a good thing a lot of the time. Especially when it comes to traffic. Spokane has much lower traffic levels than the west side of the state or the Portland area, and it flows smoothly most of the time. So being from a city where the pace is a little slower, what does traffic congestion mean to you? And is congestion necessarily a bad thing or does it mean that our area, and economy, are growing? The Spokane Regional Transportation Council (SRTC) has recently completed an update to...

  • WSU professors, graduates work to revolutionize crop production

    Dr. E. KIRESTEN PETERS, Contributor|Updated Nov 6, 2014

Earlier this year I went to a fundraiser where I bought a bag of Glee flour. Glee is a variety of hard red spring wheat that was developed at Washington State University. I used the flour in my favorite bread recipe, one I have modified a bit from a Mennonite cookbook I treasure. There’s a bit of soy flour and powered milk in my bread, which ups the protein content. The recipe calls for 50 percent white flour, 40 percent whole wheat, and 10 percent rye. I used the Glee flour as the white flour. When I set the dough in a s...

  • Looking Back

1 Years Ago Nov. 11, 2004 A standoff between Cheney police and a suspect in a domestic assault ended peacefully after several hours of negotiations as officials talked the suspect out of his house. The Cheney High School football field saw the installation of the first light poles, part of a $1.3 million upgrade for athletic fields that also included an all-weather track and new scoreboard. The Medical Lake girls' cross country team earned an eighth-place finish in 2A...

  • Farm life, relatives and then some

    LUELLA DOW, Contributor|Updated Nov 6, 2014

When I was a little girl I helped my daddy in the barn. I didn't help much but I pretended to. It kept me from having to help my mother in the garden. We were definitely a farm family with ugly brown shoes tucked inside our overshoes and chores to do every day. I liked feeding the calves best but didn't much care for helping with the chickens. We had a banty rooster that sometimes chased me all the way to the house. My sister was sick a lot of the time so she didn't have to...

  • On a recent visit to the veteran's hall

    PHIL KIVER, Contributor|Updated Nov 6, 2014

The ranks of our nation's veterans ebb and flow like the tides. World War II vets die at an unstoppable rate. The current war on terror adds daily to the number of our nation's heroes. West Africa, Syria, Somalia, Iraq III and various other locations around the world even some unknown to the public. Missions only mentioned in diaries or over beers. In five years we will have young veterans who were born after 9/11. In a recent class I asked one of my students how much pain we...

  • School district should consider privacy of all students

    Updated Nov 6, 2014

How did we come to this? State law says that schools cannot discriminate on bases of sex, sexual orientation, gender expression or gender identity. It is a good law except when it violates common sense and the rights of others. Cheney School District is considering adopting a new nondiscrimination policy that addresses transgender student issues. Within the new policy is the transgender students’ right to access the restrooms and locker rooms with which they most associate their identity. The new policy reads: “The Dis...

  • Near accident on Halloween night

    Updated Nov 6, 2014

Halloween, a night my children have been looking forward to for many weeks was almost cut short with tragedy. While crossing North Sixth Street in Cheney, near the CHS baseball field, approximately 5:45 in the evening, a vehicle with at least two young people failed to yield to our party of 7, prompting us to physically grab our 6 year old from continuing to cross. This SUV never even tried to stop or even slow down and it truly sent a chill down my spine as to what could have happened, if the adults in our party had not...

  • Some clocks just can't be reset when the time changes

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Nov 6, 2014

There it was, that familiar thump in the night. I rolled over in the bed in the darkness this past Sunday to check the time on my phone. A touch of the “on” button and 4:22 a.m. flashed back at me. While still groggy from being roused out of a pleasant sleep, I was reminded that Daylight Savings Time had once again passed into history and that 4:22 a.m. was really 5:22. As Standard Time arrived again it was nice to know there was at least one clock in my life that did not nee...

  • Focus on the flu, get your vaccination

    Updated Nov 6, 2014

Flu season has begun, yet there hasn’t been the normal concern for the virus that there usually is at this time of the year. For several months, Americans have been concerned with the threat of the Ebola virus. Since the media announced that two Americans contracted Ebola while helping patients in Monrovia, Liberia, people have been in a panic about the virus spreading throughout the country. Although Ebola is serious in the Southwestern region of Africa, the chances of a person contracting it in the United States is low u...
