  • Cheney's current expense woes

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Oct 29, 2015

Cheney Mayor Tom Trulove calls it the “trouble fund.” It’s technically known as the current expense fund, or the general fund. It’s the section of municipal government whose revenues rely mostly on that five-letter word citizens hate most — taxes. And yet, like a drink with multiple straws, it’s the fund many municipal departments rely on to operate — departments such as police, fire, courts, administration, finance and, to a much lesser degree in Cheney, parks and recreation. And like other cities around the state, Cheney...

1 Years Ago Nov. 4, 2005 The Cheney City Council passed a resolution openly acknowledging their opposition to the Union Pacific Railroad’s plan to increase speeds from 35 miles per-hour to the federally authorized 60 mph. The Medical Lake garbage fund was estimated to begin 2006 facing a $36,000 deficit, a number that had slowly been building since 1999 when rates were reduced for landfill use. Medical Lake’s David Jacob ran a season-best time of 16 minutes, 22 seconds and earned his third consecutive berth at the state 2A...

  • Specialty Machining lives up to its name

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Oct 29, 2015

It's not called Specialty Machining just because that was the first name that came to the mind of company founder Wayne Hagel. The business located on Geiger Boulevard along Interstate 90 near Spokane International Airport has been taking on the challenges others might not want to - or hadn'r even thought of - for nearly a half century. "Dad kind of started the business on the back of self-cleaning plywood lathe chucks," owner Rod Hagel said. A lathe chuck goes on each end of...

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Oct 29, 2015

There's little that grows well across the vast scablands on the West Plains. But Ritchie Brothers Auctions has found a crop that can temporarily turn serious money out of several acres of land the company occupies along Interstate 90. A used equipment sale that takes place Friday, Nov. 13 will move between 200-300 pieces of equipment that is slowly being assembled along Geiger Boulevard, RB Auctions territory sales manager, Josh Lubig, said. This area last hosted a sale in...

  • Eastern Washington to honor Covington's work and legacy

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Oct 29, 2015

Eastern Washington University is laying the groundwork for an academic and community program to honor the legacy of Lucy Covington, a Colville Tribal Council member who had a large impact on American Indian history. During the '50s and '60s, Covington worked to organize an end to "termination," a federal policy designed to take control of land and natural resources from tribal ownership by terminating tribal status. Covington's actions helped preserve tribal sovereignty and...

  • Medical Lake NHS offers academic help to classmates

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Oct 29, 2015

One of the four pillars of the National Honor Society (NHS) is service. According to its website service is a willingness to work for the benefit of those in need without compensation or recognition. High school NHS chapters will dedicate many hours to performing community service projects, but some will also take time to help improve their school. One way Medical Lake is doing this is by offering tutoring for their classmates during lunchtime in the counseling center, Monday...

  • Being a good citizen is more than just being a good resident

    OZZIE KNEZOVICH, Contributor|Updated Oct 29, 2015

The PACE character trait for November is citizenship. Citizenship is often thought of in two ways. The first way people may think of citizenship is one’s legal status of being a citizen of a country. In looking at citizenship in this way, the mere fact that you live in a country and have sworn or affirmed your allegiance to the country makes you a member of that country’s society. In this respect citizenship is belonging to the collective community or society. However, citizenship is much more than just living in and bel...

  • Expanding commissioners deserves your 'Yes' vote

    Updated Oct 29, 2015

Rarely is it a good idea when more government is seen as a positive change, but in the case of Spokane County Proposition 1, the Cheney Free Press editorial board thinks it is a good idea to expand the board of Spokane County Commissioners from its present three members to five. We probably never want to think that our public servants work too hard, but in the case of commissioners, they have many long days. They attend numerous meetings in a week and are likely to serve on just as many boards, which means there is little...

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Oct 29, 2015

  • Same old budget song and dance - with a twist

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Oct 29, 2015

For the most part, the Medical Lake City Council budget workshop held prior to the Oct. 20 council meeting resembled the same workshop held in 2014 — and 2013, and 2012 and on back. The city has looming major expenses, but with revenues flat and little sign of increasing, it must either put the expense off another year or look for creative ways to fund it. There was one sliver of good news delivered by City Administrator Doug Ross, however, and that is the city is scheduled — barring unforeseen developments — to soon be debt...
