  • Looking Back

1 Years Ago October 21, 1999 The Medical Lake City Council was accused of ramming through a property tax increase in advance of an upcoming general election where the state will vote on Initiative 695 that will slash motor vehicle license fees. • Gardening in our Area

Bugs and seeds are clues about next year's garden By LAVERLE MCCANDLESS Contributor The question most often asked this past week was, “What are those clouds of flying insects?” They are winged aphids looking for a place to hide out and hibernate through the winter and come back next spring and start all over to try and disrupt the gardeners intentions of having perfect plants. Yes, they are miserable flying in your face, hair, on your clothes and in general a big nuisance! They were all over for a few days. The cold wea... Full story

  • Of Cabbages and Kings

A writer emerges with a poem about families and memories By LUELLE DOW Contributor Back in August I suggested someone write a story for the title “Only Trees Move At Midnight.” Shortly thereafter I met Bonnie Morrison Haines. She actually reads the Cheney Free Press. She reads my “contributions!” We talked. Soon I received a letter from her. “Thinking of quiet, dark nights,” she said, “the enclosed verses emerged to ‘move me at midnight.'” Bonnie reminisces about her family home and of all the memories stored within. Sh...

  • Plan B needed for institutional vacuum

Medical Lake dodged a double dose of worry last week when the state released the first draft of a report calling for Pine Lodge Corrections Center to stay open. Lakeland Village, however, wasn't so fortunate, with recommendations for massive reductions to take place over the next eight years that would leave the facility a husk of its former self. This isn't the first time either Lakeland or Pine Lodge has been on the chopping block. The capacity of the 30-year-old corrections center was halved early this year following a...

Growth. It's a four-letter word to some folks. OK, it's actually a six-letter word, but you get my meaning. At last Wednesday's Cheney Free Press Candidates Forum I borrowed a letter to the editor for some questions of our City Council and mayoral candidates about growth. I only mentioned the writer's feelings that Cheney's growth is too much, out of control and damaging to the small-town, family character of the city. If I paraphrased incorrectly I apologize, but the author did state that this growth was turning Cheney into... Full story

  • Letters to the editor

Former council member supports Tom Trulove for mayor Please vote for Tom Trulove. His leadership, qualifications, experience and judgement are needed to get the city of Cheney on track to meet the challenges now and in the future. Under the current administration there have been instances of some lax spending controls, a confusing budget process and a lack of direction. There have been costly actions and errors such as a fabricated water moratorium, water and electric meter errors costing lost revenues of many thousands of...
