  • Lady Hawks fall to East Valley on late goal

    Updated Oct 25, 2012

By JOHN McCALLUM Editor A last minute breakaway goal sent the Lady Hawks soccer team to defeat in a crucial Great Northern League match up last Thursday at East Valley. In the 77th minute, Cheney struggled to possess a ball in the midfield and the Knights capitalized, sending a pass over the Lady Hawks defenders into the backfield. Nikkie Roemer tracked it down, dribbled about 20 yards and launched a shot from just outside the 18-yard box over goalkeeper Montana Andrews for the score giving East Valley the 2-1 win. It was a...

  • Cards defend Seaport Invite title, finish NEA season, prep for regionals

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Oct 25, 2012

It took three tries to finally get the event in the books but Medical Lake was able to preservere and will now be listed as the two-time defending champions at Clarkston’s Seaport Invitational cross country race. Postponed twice because of smoke from wildfires, the meet was run last Friday where the Cardinals scored a 38-58 win over Asotin on the boys’ side and won in a tiebreaker over Moscow, Idaho in girls’ competition. Senior Kelby Wegner helped lead the girls to the event...

  • Cheney swimmers down Grandview for season’s first win

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Oct 25, 2012

The Cheney girls’ swimming team notched its first win of the season last Saturday, downing Grandview 106-55 in double-dual action that also included Prosser at a very hot Eastern Washington University pool. The Blackhawks didn’t quite pull off a double win, however, swimming well in losing to the Mustangs 94-71. Finishes for the meet were based on head-to-head competition between the three teams. For example a Cheney swimmer who finished first against Grandview in one event might finish second against a Prosser swimmer in...

  • Postseason talk in Medical Lake is good thing to hear once again

    Updated Oct 25, 2012

By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter There’s a new vibe in Medical Lake these days, something that hasn’t been heard in quite a while – better than a decade by some accounts. It’s the talk of some Cardinals’ teams getting to be part of a meaningful postseason in autumn for the first time in a number of years. As October slides toward November both the Medical Lake cross country and football teams have realistic shots at competing past the regular season. “It’s kind of exciting and kind of nerve-wracking because you don’t want an...

  • Medical Lake gets road win in Kettle Falls

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Oct 25, 2012

Medical Lake got a chance for a do-over last Friday. The Cardinals went on the road and took a 28-14 Northeast A League football victory over Kettle Falls, putting a damper on the Bulldogs’ Homecoming, much like Chewelah did two weeks ago with their 33-28 win in Medical Lake’s Homecoming and Hall-of-Fame game. With the one-two punch of seniors Micah Tappero and Seth Hansen providing the offense, Medical Lake scored the game’s first touchdown on their initial possession and t...

  • EWU topples No. 2 Montana State, 27-24

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Oct 25, 2012

Two years ago on their trip to Bozeman it was a 35-7 thumping at the hands of Montana State that Eastern Washington head coach Beau Baldwin later admitted helped jump-start his team’s run to an 11-game winning streak and a national championship. How last Saturday’s 27-24 upset win by the then No. 6 Eagles over the then No. 2 Bobcats shakes out in the 2012 Football Championship Subdivision championship picture remains to be seen. But the most immediate result was Eastern vau...

  • More of us need an appreciation of history

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Oct 21, 2012

The Cheney Cemetery Association surprised me with something last week I never considered receiving. I was asked to speak at their annual meeting Friday at the United Methodist Church, something not unusual. I have spoken to groups and classes during my tenure at the Cheney Free Press and am always ready to do so. It’s a fascinating career being in the media, despite the reputation and the criticism – sometimes deserved – we receive. The association asked me to speak about how we develop topics for stories. After my talk I sta...

  • EWU’s Gateway Project is a positive change for Cheney

    Editorial Roundtable|Updated Oct 21, 2012

With an electric Homecoming atmosphere in Cheney flowing from both Cheney High School and Eastern Washington University, October could someday be even more exciting with the addition of the Gateway Project at Roos Field. The EWU homecoming parade, bed races and other events, combined with the high school’s events this year, make for a special weekend. We believe the Gateway Project will only help boost Cheney’s profile upon its completion. Currently in the design and fundraising stage, the Gateway Project is a multi-use fac...

Haskell said he and his wife had been looking for a new home over the last couple of years, and they weren’t able to find a house within the district. By moving outside the district, Haskell would make himself ineligible to serve on the Cheney School Board. Haskell has served on the board since his election in 2007 as the representative for District 3—covering part of Four Lakes and the areas north of Four Lak...

Community input is placed at a high value at a series of forums held by the Spokane County Library District. The goal is to gauge what items are of high importance to a community and how the library can best serve those areas. • Planning the future of Cheney High School

    Updated Oct 21, 2012

By BECKY THOMAS Staff Reporter In recent years, staff members at Cheney High School have changed the way they work to deal with the headaches. Long lines at lunch? Add more people to swipe cards during the rush. Not enough room for students to sit in the cafeteria? Send the kids out in the halls to eat and monitor them. Not enough classrooms for all teachers to have a home base? Load your supplies onto a cart and teach a class in a colleague’s room during their prep time. CHS principal Troy Heuett said the school’s staff has...

    JAMES EIK, Staff Reporter|Updated Oct 21, 2012

Annexations in Airway Heights this year have altered the way the city approached its budget for 2013 and were discussed in a public hearing at the Monday, Oct. 15 meeting of the Airway Heights City Council. A large amount of land was annexed east of Hayford Road to Deer Heights Road, in coordination with the city of Spokane. As a result, the city’s revenues had a slight change compared to 2012. Airway Heights’ assessed valuation is up by a projected 32.1 percent for 2013 from this year, increasing to $454,244,884. In 200...

  • Another tight budget year for ML

    JAMES EIK, Staff Reporter|Updated Oct 21, 2012

The Medical Lake City Council looked to next year’s budget in its 2013 budget workshop, although much remains the same from this year. The city looked at its fire and emergency medical services department, specifically at three key items: retaining the points system pay for volunteer firefighters, the Emergency Medical Services levy and potential fees for the Department of Social and Health Services. Facing renewal this year is the city’s 1 percent EMS levy. Mayor John Higgins said homeowners wouldn’t see a rate increase, as...
