  • Cheney burned by fire contract

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Oct 16, 2015

Nobody knows exactly how it happened, but somehow a misapplication of a payment formula has left the city of Cheney out of collecting tens of thousands of dollars on its annual fire contract with Eastern Washington University. "I don't know what went wrong, but somehow the numbers changed dramatically to where we were shorting ourselves significantly," Cheney Fire Chief Mike Winters said in a recent interview. Winters had been involved in all fire contract negotiations since c...

The Blackhawks’ boys scratched and clawed their way to a close win over West Valley, 26-30, Oct. 7 while the girls had a little easier time dispatching the Eagles on their 5,000-meter home course at Plantes Ferry Park, winning 20-38. This is Cheney’s third shutout of the season, which includes a 28-0 win over Colville (Sept. 4), and a 49-0 victory over Idaho’s Lakeland High (Sept. 18). Cheney got on the scoreboard early with quarterback Jake Martin’s scoring pass to Cam Hardt. Martin followed it up with another scoring pass to Logan Kendall. Ty Graha...

  • Looking Back

    Updated Oct 15, 2015

1 Years Ago Oct. 20, 2005 Cheney officials were denying they offered discounts for building permits. But those who built more expensive structures over $1 million found their cost at 56-cents per dollar versus 99 cents per $1 for those between $500,000 to $1 million. Medical Lake mayoral candidate John Higgins campaigned on, among other things, the idea of improving the city’s business district. The Cheney girl’s cross country team scored their third consecutive victory beating Gonzaga Prep 25-30 but lost to North Cen...

  • Is the world becoming safer or more dangerous?

    ED FEULNER, Contributor|Updated Oct 15, 2015

By Contributor Few people would select the first option. It doesn’t take Russia launching air strikes in Syria (to cite only one recent example) for most to admit that tensions are rising. So why in the world are we cutting defense spending? And not by small amounts. The U.S. military — which is smaller today than it was on 9/11 — has had to contend with cuts amounting to more than $180 billion over the last four years. And there’s no relief in sight. In fact, President Obama is preparing to veto a bipartisan bill that would...

  • Uncontested races hurt quality of election process

    Updated Oct 15, 2015

Unfortunately, we’d like to extend our congratulations to the candidates winning seats on our local city councils. Congratulations, you ask. But isn’t the election still almost three weeks away? And why unfortunately? Yes, congratulations and yes, the election is still three weeks away. Unfortunately, because of the 12 positions up for “grabs” among Airway Heights, Cheney and Medical Lake, only two — Airway Heights and Medical Lake — have contested races. Ten council candidates face no challengers, three of the five seats...

  • Signs say Cheney still a good place to do business

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Oct 15, 2015

The recent building boom for business in Cheney appears to back up what NAI-Black commercial real estate broker Brian Anderson is saying about the community. "People like it, businesses that come here like it," Anderson said. A Cheney resident, Anderson said he receives plenty of calls from investors. "People want to buy stuff in Cheney. Apartment buildings almost never turn." Commercial buildings rarely come up for sale, either, he said. "The overall vibe is positive." One,...

  • Golden Hills receives plat extension

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Oct 15, 2015

Cheney planning commissioners agreed enough progress had been made on an undeveloped portion of the Golden Hills subdivision, and that there was enough hope construction might begin soon that they granted a fourth, two-year extension to the owner of a sizeable portion of the parcel. Michael Erkmann, owner of an 8.15-acre portion of Golden Hills Fourth Addition, submitted a request to the commission to grant him another extension of the parcel. The city’s municipal code allows for approval of plat extensions of up to two y...
