They came that close... The 1967 Eastern Washington State College Savages football team had a magical season under coach Dave Holmes that led to the NAIA national championship game versus Fairmont State College of West Virginia. The team lost just once that season, 28-21 in the title game played at Morgantown, W.V. at the University of West Virginia. That team was honored on its 50th anniversary prior to the 2017 Eastern Washington season opening game Sept. 9 versus North...

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 14, 2017

The wildfire smoke that left the region choking has finally been whisked away, but it’s left the Medical Lake cross country team a little sight impaired as the Cardinals get a delayed start to their season. Following the cancellation of the Highlander Invite on Sept. 9 at Shadle Park High School, ML head coach Gene Blankenship is left to wonder a bit as he preps the team for Saturday’s Seaport Invitational in Clarkston, Wash. “You get a chance to find out who really are the t...

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 14, 2017

Medical Lake appeared to have made some strides in its opening football game versus Kellogg on Sept. 1. But the progress took a step backwards it appears when the Cardinals were shutout 29-0 Saturday, Sept. 9 at Priest River. The game was moved after virtually all area high school sports were either postponed or canceled due to the lingering wildfire smoke that blanketed the region. The Cardinals (0-2) were limited to just 65 total yards, 48 of that through the air via the...

The senior forward scored all five Medical Lake goals in a 5-1 Northeast A League win over Newport that was rescheduled from Sept. 7 due to problems with wildfire smoke. Geiger, who scored 14 times last season and set a school record with 21 career goals, opened scoring for the Cards (1-1) at the 20-minute mark. • Cheney defeats Rogers for first volleyball win

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Sep 14, 2017

Unhealthy air caused by smoke from regional wildfires played havoc with the opening of local high school sports action last week — indoors as well as outdoors. Rules governing Pullman School District activities led not only to the cancellation of its soccer match last Thursday with Cheney, but also that evening’s volleyball contest with the Blackhawks. Third-year CHS volleyball head coach Heather Zorrozua’s squad did manage to hit the hardwood competitively — hosting Greater Spokane League 3A Rogers on Sept. 6. After droppin...

  • CHS football rally falls short in 33-27 loss to North Central

    Grace Pohl, Staff Intern|Updated Sep 14, 2017

Due to the smoke filled air, the Cheney High School football team's game was delayed by one day and took place last Saturday afternoon against Greater Spokane League's North Central where the Blackhawks rallied from behind but eventually fell 33-27. "As far as effort, the boys did great," head coach Bobby Byrd said. "It was a wacky situation with it being a mid-day rescheduled game, but it came down to the team with less mistakes and North Central did a great job at that."...

  • Blackhawks' girls run to win in Moses Lake Invitational

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Sep 14, 2017

Despite the cancellation of the annual Highlander Invitational at Shadle Park due to still smoky conditions, the Cheney High School cross country teams still found a way to make it onto a course for their first competition of the season. They just had to travel a bit further to do it. The Blackhawks managed to squeeze in to the Moses Lake Invitational at Blue Heron Park on Saturday, likely to the displeasure of several other teams. The Cheney girls took first in the varsity and junior varsity 5,000-meter races while the boys...

The Rams are 1-1 after an opening crusher of a loss, 64-6 at Army and a 38-31 come-from-behind win over Central Connecticut, both on the...

  • Eagles are stampeded by the Bison

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 14, 2017

It had no official title. But last Saturday's home opening football game between the No. 2 ranked Football Championship Subdivision North Dakota State Bison and the then No. 7 Eastern Washington Eagles could have had a catchy subtext. Rumble on the Red or the Rivalry at Roos have an alliterative ring. As it turned out it was a Bison stampede as the rubber-match between the two football powers ended in a 40-13 NDSU rout. Few saw that coming after the previous two match-ups have...

  • Cheney 'flood gates' open for 9-0 soccer win

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Sep 14, 2017

Cheney High girls soccer head coach Nels Radtke had a good feeling early on in last Saturday's non-league game with West Plains rival Medical Lake. Both teams battled each other pretty evenly through the first 30 minutes of the game on the Lady Blackhawks pitch. Cheney settled for outside shots at the start, with Cardinals goalkeeper Annastasia Hurt-Moran making several key saves. That changed in the 31st minute when Emma Evans connected with Kaitlin Teeters for a goal. What...
