  • Cardinal cross country runners impress coach at Silverwood race

Medical Lake boys finish ahead of defending state champion Lakeside in Coaster Classic By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter One part of Gene Blankenship hates the yearly trips his Medical Lake cross country team takes to Silverwood Theme Park. His stomach. That's because “of the pure terror,” the park's churning thrill rides produce for the Cardinals' head coach. But what his boys' team did last Saturday at the Coaster Classic race will be the perfect way to combat any nausea. Beating the defending state champions in your cla...

  • Eastern falls to Washington State 24-20 in another thriller

Late Eagle rally falls short in contest against Pac-12 Palouse neighbor By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter On a picture perfect day against a Pac-12 team a pass in the final seconds fails to connect in the right hands and Eastern Washington University has a win against a Football Bowl Subdivision foe slip away. So you say you've heard this story before? Well, you have. For a second straight year the Eagles saw a comeback fall short, this time last Saturday in Pullman's Martin Stadium in a 24-20 non conference loss to Washington...

  • Blackhawks turn in good times at Highlander

By JOHN McCALLUM Editor After weeks of lonely road work Cheney cross country teams finally got to test themselves against runners wearing different colored jerseys at last Saturday's 26-team Highlander Invitational at Shadle Park High School. The Blackhawks' boys competed against runners in their own class standing, while the girls ran in three races: freshmen, a combined race for schools with under 600 enrollment and JV squads from larger schools and finally the varsity race. Junior Kyle Lerch posted the fastest time for...

  • Cheney's 7-3 win over Lakeside is first on the pitch for Lady Hawks

By JOHN McCALLUM Editor Sometimes that first win is the hardest to get. Thanks to a three-goal performance by Jade McCauley and two scores each from Chae Brown and Jaisa Holland the Cheney girls' soccer team can now put one in the “W” category, getting their first win of the season by knocking off visiting Lakeside 7-3 last Tuesday. And while new head coach Nels Radtke isn't keen on moral victories, he felt the Lady Hawks played one of their better games so far in Friday's 4-1 home loss to Lewis and Clark. Holland was inv...

  • Free Press Sports Briefs for Sept. 13, 2012

Eastern volleyball begins Big Sky play It was not the smoothest preseason, but the Eastern Washington University volleyball team survived, and now looks ahead to conference play. Eastern begins Big Sky play today, (Sept. 13) at Sacramento State. The Eagles (0-11) make their home debut this Monday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. against Portland State. In the first month of the 2012 season, the Eagles were hit with a rash of injuries, as well as an unexpected coaching change. Eastern played its first nine matches of the year without a...

  • Eastern women get less time to prepare for Big Sky basketball grind

New additions to conference mean non-conference schedule gets trimmed for 2012-13 By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter The 2012-13 Eastern Washington University women's basketball schedule appears to have a slightly more slimming, lighter look to it – at least on the non-conference side. With the addition of North Dakota and Southern Utah as new members to the Big Sky Conference, Eastern's league schedule had to expand and the warm-up games had to shrink. The schedule, released Sept. 6, includes 20 games against BSC teams and n...

  • Medical Lake soccer, volleyball seek first wins

Medical Lake's soccer and volleyball teams are both chasing their first wins this week. The Cardinal soccer squad was on the road in Colville this past Tuesday and will be home today (Sept. 13) for a non-league match with Deer Park at 4 p.m. on the lower field at MLHS. Medical Lake fell in its opener in a non-league contest 6-1 to former Great Northern League rival, Clarkston Sept. 6. Sabrina Earle scored the lone goal for the Cardinals. They next lost in overtime to Greater Spokane League Rogers, 1-0, Sept. 8. Volleyball, 0-...

  • Lady Hawks win four straight to capture bronze at Lakeland Invite

By JOHN McCALLUM Editor The Cheney volleyball team made the most of a bad draw at last Saturday's Lakeland Invitational. The Lady Hawks lost both matches in pool play, but rebounded to win four straight and bring home a first-place trophy in the Bronze Division of the annual North Idaho tournament. Cheney drew a pair of upper classification teams to open the tournament: Coeur d'Alene of Idaho's 5A and Lewis and Clark of the 4A Greater Spokane League. The Lady Hawks played well in the first set but struggled in the second in t...

  • Omak no match for Cheney in 56-0 win

By JOHN McCALLUM Editor Omak learned the true meaning of the phrase “Speed kills” last Friday night, thanks to the Cheney football team. The Blackhawks ran around, through and past the visiting Pioneers, scoring all eight of their touchdowns on the ground, three by Austin Kautzman and two by Marquis Allen, in a 56-0 romp over the team from the 1A Caribou Trail League. If it wasn't for a couple penalties negating other scores and a running clock after a 40-point lead, it could have been worse. “We played pretty well, and b...

  • Clutch catches, kicking, special teams lead to win for ML

Cardinals recover late squib kick to help secure 22-16 win By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter Medical Lake head football coach Wes Hobbs will be the first one to tell you his team's kicking game could use a jolt. Last Friday night a portion of that aspect of the game worked perfectly, late at least, as the Cardinals (2-0) scored another thrilling 22-16 non-league football win over visiting Bonners Ferry at Holliday Field. Following his 44-yard touchdown toss to Kasey Kelly for the tie-breaking points with just 3:24 to play,...

  • West Plains school leaders share state of their districts

By BECKY THOMAS and JAMES EIK Staff Reporters At its Sept. 6 meeting, the West Plains Chamber of Commerce had some educational guests. Local school district superintendents spoke to chamber members about the new school year and the issues facing their districts in the annual “State of Our Schools” address. Medical Lake's Superintendent Pam Veltri said the district continued to see financial difficulty as its student population faced annual declines. Most of the drop was attributed to fewer students living at Fairchild Air For...

  • Write to the Point: Reliving Sept. 11 in the New Orleans mint

By JAMES EIK Staff Reporter Two years ago, I came face-to-face with remnants of the World Trade Center. I was visiting family in New Orleans on a warm summer day, much like one in Spokane only with extra humidity where even the humidity was humid. We walked through the old New Orleans mint building, just outside the French Quarter. Sounds of nearby vendors shouting out their deals of the day could be overheard as we were entering the building. It's a gorgeous place, really, a three-level brick building encased in a black...

  • Letters to the Editor

Rich Cowan's experience makes him the right candidate I had the opportunity to meet Rich Cowan the other night. It seemed to me everything he's done to this point has prepared him to represent the 5th Congressional District in Washington, DC. Rich grew up in Spokane and attended WSU. He raised his family here and sent his kids to Lewis and Clark High School. He's served numerous non-profits as a member of their boards of directors. You think he knows our community? Rich built a business here, North by Northwest Productions,...

  • Guest Opinion: Constitution Week asks some key questions about history

By Dr. JANET NORBY Esther Reed Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution Each year The President of the United States, in accordance with Public Law 915, proclaims the week of Sept. 17-23 as Constitution Week. Traditionally both our governor and our mayor also issue such proclamations. Regrettably, many of us give little thought to these proclamations, and may even be unaware of why they are issued. Most of us are fully aware of the significance of the date July 4, 1776, but fewer regard Sept. 17, 1787,...

  • Jimmy John's franchise planned for historic Cheney building

By BECKY THOMAS Staff Reporter One of Cheney's oldest buildings is on its way to becoming a Jimmy John's restaurant. The building at 327 First St. in downtown Cheney, built as the Odd Fellows Hall in 1904, has been vacant in recent years, but owner Steve Emtman says the building has received more than $100,000 in structural repairs and is ready for a tenant. That tenant is a Jimmy John's sandwich shop, operated by Ric and Kathy Rocca, who currently operate four Jimmy John's franchises in Spokane. The Roccas plan to open the C...

  • Eastern's ‘D' keys 20-3 win over Vandals

By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter The pedigree of the Eastern Washington University football team has always generally been its offense. But somewhat quietly last Thursday night it was the Eagles' defense that paved the way for Eastern to score a 20-3 season opening victory over the University of Idaho at the Kibbie Dome in Moscow. Holding the Western Athletic Conference Vandals to just 237 yards – 164 through the air and a paltry 73 on the ground – the Eastern “D” helped secure the school's first win over a Football Bowl Divisi...

  • Crunch Time for September 13, 2012

Athletes' safety can start in the stands By JOHN McCALLUM Editor The contrast was so startling I had to chuckle. Standing along the sidelines at any sporting event you hear a lot of things. Last Friday night at the Cheney football game with Omak, as I watched a Pioneers kickoff return a voice came ringing out of the stands: “Kill him! Kill him!” It's not the first time, and it won't be the last, but what cracked me up was the voice was female. I couldn't tell if it was a student or some mom gone wild-eyed nuts, but the con...

  • Sprague Avenue realigns to the south

Design provides new gateway to Airway Heights By JAMES EIK Staff Reporter The $3 million realignment of Sprague Avenue is nearly complete, with only superficial work remaining. Brandon Haugen, manager of Kalispel Development with the Kalispel Tribe, said the project was a joint effort between the city of Airway Heights and the tribe, and finished right in the expected timeframe of the summer of 2012. “The tribe and the city have worked for years to establish another gateway element into the city of Airway Heights and this r...

Kiver will present “Missoula Floods in the Northern Reaches” on Thursday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. at Spokane Community College, Lair Auditorium in the Student Union Building No. 6. As recently as 15,000 years ago, up to 500 cubic miles of water roared across the Pacific Northwest forever changing the lan...

  • Council approves leasing new police vehicles

Chief John Hensley says they're needed but budget constraints prevent purchase By BECKY THOMAS Staff Reporter The Cheney City Council approved a four-year lease agreement for three new police vehicles at its Tuesday meeting. The vehicles, Ford Interceptor SUVs, would be leased at $33,358 per year and would replace three cars—which were 8-10 years old or had logged more than 100,000 miles—preserving the current fleet total of 11 vehicles. Police Chief John Hensley told the council that the Police Department needed the new veh...

  • Cheney water main leaks near apartment complex

Cheney water crews were hard at work Wednesday, Sept. 5, looking to access a leaking water main that sent water streaming down the driveway of the Willow Wood apartment complex at 111 College Hill Road. The city was notified around 8:20 a.m. and crews were still working to access the broken pipe early Wednesday afternoon. Public Works director Todd Ableman said the pipe that leaked was around 40 years old, and the leak was likely caused by age deterioration combined with abrasion from rocks moving over the outside of the...
