OLYMPIA—The Washington State Patrol (WSP) in conjunction with 145 other law enforcement agencies around the state will have extra driving under the influence (DUI) patrols out from now through Sept. 4. During 2016, impaired drivers were involved in crashes that resulted in 277 deaths and another 286 serious injuries. The WSP arrested 12,949 impaired drivers last year. Two outside bathrooms in Medical Lake have been the recent targets of an apparent arsonist, the city’s assistant fire chief Corey Stevens, said. Crews doing site preparation work struck a natural gas line at Betz Elementary School last Wednesday afternoon, forcing evacuation of the few number of school staff present in the building at the time. After months of waiting while the state Legislature grappled with how to meet a court order to fully fund basic education, the Cheney School District board of directors finally got to adopt a budget for the 2017–2018 school year.
