  • Summer Hawks fall short in playoffs against Mt. Spokane

    By JOHN McCALLUM Editor Cheney’s Spokane American Legion A North Division team fell just short of extending their playoff run, losing their first round series to division champion Mt. Spokane via a 4-3 loss in the third and final game on July 24. The SummerHawks took the Wildcats to the wire in the final game, tying the score at 3 in the top of the seventh, and had the bases loaded with no outs, but couldn’t find a way to push across the go ahead run.   • Zachman, Issa run at East West Shrine

    By JOHN McCALLUM Editor Cheney High School graduates and Blackhawks cross country standouts Arick Zachman and Daniel Issa competed in the annual East/West Senior All-Star Race, held July 19 at Seattle’s Magnusson Park. The top male and female cross-country runners from all five classifications take part in the competition. Zachman finished seventh overall in the 59-runner field and third overall for the East team, covering the 5-kilometer course in a time of 16 minutes, 56 seconds, and scoring seven points for the East... Full story

    By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter The Eastern Washington University hockey team has unveiled their 17-game 2009-10 home schedule at the university’s Student Recreation Center. The season kicks off Friday, Sept. 25 at 7:30 p.m. with an exhibition game against the Tri City Titans junior team. Eastern will also host Nevada Las Vegas, Utah State, Colorado State and San Jose State in the team’s second annual Showcase, set for January 14-17. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) secured funding in the Transportation Housing and Urban Development Appropriations bill for the 2010 fiscal year.   • Cheney Fire Department building may get facelift

    City puts up $15,000 towards grant application to better chances of being awarded $3 million By DAVID TELLER Staff Reporter If the Cheney Fire Department can spend $15,000 from its budget to get $3 million then Fire Chief Mike Winters said he's willing to do it.   • Cheney Light Department to deliver light bulbs to customers

    ##M:[Read more here] The Cheney Light Department will be delivering compact fluorescent bulbs to its 4,000 customers by Sept. 30. Cheney residents should use the new lower energy bulbs to replace their high-use incandescent bulbs. Sharon Hall earned the initials at the end of her name, DPT, when she received her doctorate in physical therapy from Boston University in January.
