  • Write to the Point: Jon Lord's passage stresses our mortality, and need for vitality

By John McCallum Editor The world has once again lost another great musician. Jon Lord, keyboardist and founding member of the rock band Deep Purple passed away due to complications from pancreatic cancer July 16. For those who thought I was going to say singer Kitty Wells that also is a tragedy given her legacy and the impact she had on country music, especially female performers in the genre. Wells was 92, and country music was not as much of an influence on my musical tastes and, yes, my formative years as Lord and his...

  • Crunch Time for July 19, 2012

Kelly measures ML Legion success differently By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter Kerry Kelly will be the first one to admit he would have loved to still be playing baseball right now. The figures don't lie, however, nor do they add up to a spot in the American Legion Baseball AA postseason. But for Medical Lake, the little baseball engine that could – and did at the most unlikely times against the best of teams – despite no playoffs, Kelly still has plenty of payoffs in 2012. Kelly's collection of yours, mine and ours players is...

  • Medical Lake bats, defense comes to rescue in Legion finale

By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter On paper they had nothing to play for other than pride. But as Medical Lake closed out the 2012 AA American Legion season you might not have known they were supposed to just go through the motions following winning two of their final three games last week. Starting off with a 13-7 win over Chewelah last Tuesday, Medical Lake was squashed 10-0 by University Thursday and then finished with a tense 10-9 win over Mt. Spokane this past Sunday. They finished their American League season at 5-14 and...

  • Looking Back

1 Years Ago July 25, 2002 Spokane County Regional Health District officials still had not found the source of an E. coli 0157outbreak that swept through a dance camp held at Eastern Washington University that infected an estimated 45 of the 90 in attendance. There were 22 laboratory confirmed cases. A room full of residents, 182 names on a petition, and overwhelming opposition voices from those citizens couldn't keep parking meters from being approved for areas around EWU in Cheney. Mayor Amy Jo Sooy cast the deciding vote...

  • Letters to the Editor

Compromise in politics is a rarely-traveled two-way street Compromise? Who's drinking the Kool-Aid? A recent opinion letter (Cheney Free Press July 12) from someone that is a teacher? Higher Education? Hopefully that person doesn't teach American history. Our founding fathers sure didn't have compromise with the king from the history I learned in school. But the jest of the opinion letter is that conservatives should compromise. We have the best political system in the world bar one exception. We have no political...

  • In Our Opinion: Improve declining driving safety by looking first for motorcycles

Take a drive anywhere today and you'll notice a large number of motorcycles. The number of those taking to the streets on the two-wheeled vehicles has increased dramatically over the last few years. Unfortunately, as the amount of motorcyclists increases, so do the number of accidents. Reasons for choosing motorcycles over regular vehicles vary from person to person, but right at the top is likely fuel efficiency. As long as gas prices are high and cost of living continues to increase, expect the rising trend of...

Six of Cheney's...

  • An old school approach finds success in new digs

Cheney High School's expanded weight facility brings in more athletes and produces results By JOHN McCALLUM Editor If you want an example of the axiom “If you build it, he will come” look no further than Cheney High School's new weight training facility. And if you substitute “they,” as in Blackhawks athletes, for “he,” you'll have one reason some cite for the increased success in high school sports. But to do it Cheney High's new training facility takes an old, time-honored approach. The facility was moved to the locatio...
