  • Medical Lake falters down stretch, misses playoffs

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jul 18, 2013

A five game losing streak – four in league play – to close the season shut the door on the postseason for Medical Lake’s AA American Legion baseball team. Medical Lake dropped their final four Federal League contests to finish 10-10 and in third place behind champion West Kootenay (16-2) from Trail, British Columbia and 16-4 Colville. They dropped a doubleheader at Pullman last Tuesday 13-1 and 7-6 before watching Colville win a pair 6-3 and 13-8 Friday at Holliday Field in Me...

  • Eagles picked No. 2 in Sky

    NEWS SERVICE REPORTS|Updated Jul 18, 2013

A new trend has started. For years, NCAA Football Championship Subdivision power Montana was the annual pick as the team to beat in the Big Sky Conference, but for the second-straight year, Montana State and Eastern Washington University have been picked to finish 1-2. Three-time defending Big Sky Conference football co-champion Montana State has been selected first by the media and the coaches in the polls. Eastern has been selected second, the league announced Monday (July 15) at the Summer Kickoff in Park City, Utah....

  • Replacing EWU receivers not as daunting as it seems

    NEWS SERVICE REPORTS|Updated Jul 18, 2013

The task may really look daunting from the outside, but inside the locker room there’s not much panic on Eastern Washington University’s football team when it comes to replacing the heart of the team’s offense. “Our players work on it, even without the coaches even doing anything with them,” Eastern head coach Beau Baldwin said. “They are continuously trying to be that next great playmaker.” In the 2013 season, the wide receiver position will be the focal point after EWU los...

  • SummerHawks are on good roll

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jul 18, 2013

Mathematically at least the Cheney AA SummerHawks didn’t have a chance to catch Shadle Park atop the Spokane American Legion baseball National League standings. So if nothing else they wanted to send a message. Their split in games played last Wednesday night at Al K. Jackson Field with a 3-0 win followed by an 8-0 loss might have done just that. Shadle, 15-2, has both its losses at the hands of the SummerHawks who go into playoffs this week winning eight of their last 10. C...

  • Celebrating the life of tireless outdoors woman, Robbi Castleberry

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jul 18, 2013

If you enjoy the marvelous Centennial Trail, thank Robbi Castleberry. Should you notice that homes do not line the Palisades and the Rimrock area – those basalt cliffs to the west of the Spokane River near Indian Canyon – and that is now an area for all to enjoy, tip your hat to Robbi Castleberry. If the area in which we live that is so very, very rich in all things outdoors, is something you really appreciate, perhaps offer a prayer of thanks to Robbi Castleberry. Cas...

  • Grove putts way to win in 50th Lilac City Invite

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jul 18, 2013

Russell Grove adhered to what professional golfers aspire to in order to win. He sunk the majority of his putts from within 5 feet of the cup and it was one of the critical steps he took in rallying past Corey Prugh to win the 50th edition of the Lilac City Invitational at The Fairways this past weekend. Grove stayed steady and shot a final-round 64 and four-day 270 while Prugh faltered a bit with a 69 to finish at 273. “I sunk my putts from five feet or less,” the Hayden, Ida...

  • Looking Back

    Updated Jul 18, 2013

1 Years Ago July 24, 2003 A Sunday afternoon wildfire threatened homes just south of Cheney as 30 mph winds pushed the flames toward the southern outskirts of town. The fire, estimated to have consumed 1,000 acres, started near Watt Road and Learning Tree Lane and forced the evacuation of 20 homes. Cheney voters were to get a second chance to approve a 4.75 percent electricity and natural gas surcharge that would help reinstate funding for city parks. The Cheney City Council voted unanimously to place an amended proposal on...

  • Aviation, bees and beer: Millers are living the high life

    Luella Dow, Contributor|Updated Jul 18, 2013

Jack and Ellen Miller, whose home is like a park in a rural part of the Cheney area, are noted by their neighbors as very busy people. The day I became acquainted with them I heartily agreed. The Millers settled here when Jack, an air traffic controller, was assigned to Spokane. Ellen was working at Southwest Oregon Community College as a librarian, her lifelong interest. The Millers, who grew up in a rural area, looked for a country place to call home. Jack settled into his...

  • 'Helping hands' help themselves

    Jim Hightower, Columnist|Updated Jul 18, 2013

The word “help” is so uplifting, conveying our best humanitarian values. How odd, then, to see it used in this New York Times headline: “Banks’ Lobbyists Help in Drafting Financial Bills.” I’ll bet they did! We all know how altruistic, beneficent and kindhearted Wall Street lobbyists are — when it comes to helping themselves, that is. The article explains that a small army of high-dollar influence-peddlers are not merely asking our lawmakers to free big banks from pesky rules that limit their reckless greed, but instead t...

  • Stereotypes in America: We don't need to do that in this country

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Jul 18, 2013

“OK, we don’t need you to do that.” If ever there was a clear indication of a turning point, a crux, a nexus it’s those eight little words spoken the night of Feb. 26, 2012 by a Sanford Police Department dispatcher to George Zimmerman. Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer, was following a black teen in a dark gray hooded sweatshirt who he believed was acting suspiciously. That teen was Trayvon Martin. And as history shows, Zimmerman, who acknowledged the dispatcher with an “OK,” did not follow that advice. If he had, he...

  • Drug testing for entitlement programs is a good thing

    Updated Jul 18, 2013

Leave it to Texas Gov. Rick Perry to get people talking, and certain in some circles, blood boiling. The soon-to-be former three-term chief executive – Perry recently announced he would not seek a fourth term – signed into law a new directive that would require recipients of his state’s unemployment to pass drug tests. But much like in 2010 when Arizona passed more strict laws requiring carrying identification in an attempt to fight illegal immigration at the state level, federal laws will likely and eventually rule the d...

Pat Kennedy, owner of the home located at 106 Sixth St., asked the commission at its July 11 meeting to grant approval to repairs needed on the home’s tile roof caused by damage from several recent snowstorms. Kennedy asked the commission for permission to proceed with replacing the roof itself, rather t...

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is calling all area youths to the Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge to participate in the 2013 fall waterfowl hunt. And just how any huntsman would have it, the registration will come in the form of competition. Due to a limited amount of space on the refuge, youth hunters are urged to apply to be placed into a random drawing for one of the up to eight hunting sites that will be created throughout the wetlands of the Turnbull Refuge for the fourth annual hunt. The two-day hunt, which will...

  • Council debates 'warzone' fireworks

    JAMES EIK, Staff Reporter|Updated Jul 18, 2013

The discussion of banning or heavily restricting fireworks in Medical Lake took a serious step forward as a result of the recent Fourth of July celebration in the city. Councilman Howard Jorgenson was first to bring up the subject at the Tuesday, July 16 City Council meeting. “There is a difference between fireworks and these M-80s,” he said, noting that he couldn’t hear the TV in his living room even when it was set at maximum volume. He further noted that having houses all around lighting off the bigger fireworks was a lit...
