    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Jul 10, 2014

The third annual Jedermann Gran Fondo is taking place July 19, with three timed races beginning in downtown Cheney. The rides utilize back roads, are virtually traffic free and open to any cyclist. The phrase "Gran Fondo" is Italian for "great rides" while the word "Jedermann" is derived from "Jedermann Rennen" which is German for "everyone's race." Strung together, the Jedermann Gran Fondo is "everyone's great race." The rides are 100, 66 and 30 miles in length. The 30-mile...

  • Flopping is what it's cracked up to be - and part of our sports culture

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Jul 10, 2014

By JOHN McCALLUM Editor I have a confession to make. I have been guilty of flopping. Yes, I know. It’s hard to believe. It happened during junior varsity basketball my sophomore year in high school. We were playing at Harrington, leading, and during a change in possession late in the first half my coach Jerry Price was yelling at us for someone to stop the ball — basketball code for “someone please guard the guy dribbling the ball up court.” The guards who should have been doing it were too busy running up court to get und...

  • Blue Devils get to see top teams in their 2014 Woodbat journey

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jul 10, 2014

If there was one thing the Spokane Blue Devils took away from their 2-3 finish at the Spokane Woodbat Classic it was the sneak peek at some of the pitching those who will move on to play collegiate baseball might face. But Blue Devils’ head coach Steve Hare also watched as his pitching continued to improve little by little and bats were making more and more contact. Spokane, which features Cheney players Tanner Smith and Kyle Barsness, opened the Al Jackson pod play Thursday w...

  • Wheels come off in Medical Lake's Woodbat pod

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jul 10, 2014

As far as Medical Lake head coach Kerry Kelly was concerned, his team accomplished at least part of their mission in last weekend's Spokane American Legion Woodbat Classic Tournament. Despite a 1-4 finish on paper, Kelly said his team uncovered more potential on the roster. And that is the primary focus of summer baseball for Kelly. Medical Lake opened AA pod play at Holliday Field with a 3-2 loss to Walla Walla and followed that with a 17-1 pummeling from Pendleton, Ore....

  • Cheney finishes 3-2 in Woodbat Classic

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Jul 10, 2014

Kadeem Smalls, manager of the Cheney SummerHawks American Legion baseball team, knew his group would face tough competition in this year's Wood Bat Classic Tournament, July 4-6, and boy was he right. Cheney struggled in the first day of competition, dropping a 5-1 game to Sandpoint. In the Sandpoint game, Cheney struggled to get their bats going. Andrew Witt scored the only run for the SummerHawks in the third inning. In their second game, Cheney again failed to get their...

  • An ancient American woman buried by the sea

    Dr. E. KIRESTEN PETERS, Contributor|Updated Jul 10, 2014

I need to get a cap on my front tooth redone — it has a significant chip in it. Luckily I live at a time in which dentists are in every city and town, plying their trade in ways that can help us each day. A young woman who scientists are calling Naia was not so lucky. She lived about 12,000 to 13,000 years ago in what’s now the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. A recent article in New Scientist reports that Naia’s teeth have a number of large cavities in them. Her mouth likely hurt a lot when she was alive. The name Naia comes...
