  • Raising funds to honor nation's veterans

    JAMES EIK, Staff Reporter|Updated Jun 27, 2013

Cheney’s MacKenna Jones has an ambitious goal to earn her Gold Award for Girl Scouts. Jones decided to honor our nation’s veterans with a Fallen Soldier statue that will be placed at the Washington State Veterans Cemetery in Medical Lake. But to make the project a reality, she needs fundraising help to purchase the statue. To date, she is halfway to her $8,000 goal, pushing for a Sept. 21 ceremony where it will be unveiled at the cemetery. The idea for the statue all sta...

  • Cheney council OKs pay increase

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Jun 26, 2013

At Tuesday night’s meeting Cheney’s City Council approved an ordinance raising the salary of the mayor and council members by a unanimous 4-0 vote. Or perhaps, that tally should really read 4-0-3 as, in an unusual move, three members of the council chose to abstain from voting. Councilwomen Teresa Overhauser along with councilmen John Taves and Fred Pollard all declined to cast a vote for an ordinance raising the pay of elected officials for the first time since 1994. Not only were the voting results unusual, but also the...

  • Fighting terror with more information is a problem?

    Susan Estrich, Columnist|Updated Jun 26, 2013

I have no problem with the news sites recommending stories to me, or the shopping sites figuring I’m good for another look at those size-41 shoes. I have no problem with someone using my supposedly “private” information to sell me more and target me for whatever they know I’m interested in. But I have to draw the line. And isn’t the right place to draw the line with the guys who want to use that information to fight terrorism and save our lives? The NSA. I don’t mind if (fill in the blank) is keeping an eye on me, but turning...

  • Letters

    Updated Jun 26, 2013

Reason No. 1: At 9:30 p.m. Thursday, June 13, I remembered that I forgot to pick up my daughter’s bike at Mark and Marissa Sheldon’s shop, Bicycle Time, before 6 p.m. Sydney, friend Kali and I were leaving the next morning at 6 a.m. to catch a ferry to San Juan’s Orcas Island. Panic struck, but I hesitantly dialed their home phone number. Marissa answered, I apologized profusely, and she said, “Oh no problem, Barb, we are still up. Come on in and Mark will open the shop.” We had a wonderful chat in Bicycle Time late into...

  • Political challenges on the left and right

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Jun 26, 2013

It can’t be easy being a politician. We often lambaste them for a variety of things under the sun, some real, some perceived, if not invented. But politics involves successful practice of the art of the deal, and that’s something hard to find these days in the other Washington. I get the impression members of Congress know and understand this more than they’re prone to publicly let on, based on last Friday’s visit to our office by 5th District Rep. Cathy McMorris-Rodgers. Not so much by what was said, but how it was said. Agr...

  • The state's budgeting process is evidently broken

    Updated Jun 26, 2013

After months of intense debates and deadline extensions, Washington state will have a budget for the next biennium. Eventually. The state’s Revenue and Forecast Council said last week that the state could expect an additional $231 million in tax revenue over the next two years. Economists say better home sales, modest job growth, slowly increasing consumer confidence and growing sales tax receipts account for the added revenue. With the extra $231 million, lawmakers believe there is a chance to come to an agreement on the s...

The trustees adopted the “preliminary” budget based upon what they think will be coming from Olympia at some point, agreeing to hold a special trustee meeting later this summer to approve final figures. “This is a review of what we expect the budget to look like after the Legislature acts,” EWU vice preside...

  • New ice cores may shed some more light on past climate change

    Dr. E. KIRSTEN PETERS, Contributor|Updated Jun 26, 2013

Late in the last century scientists published reams of data about Earth’s climate derived from ice cores taken from Greenland and Antarctic. By drilling down into the polar ice with hollow bits, workers were able to pull columns of ice up to the surface. The material brought to light in this way was very special for several reasons. First, the ice cores show annual layers going back in time. That means scientists can count backwards through time from the surface downward, a bit like school kids counting the rings of a t...

  • Of Cabbages and Kings: This one is really for the birds

    LUELLA DOW, Contributor|Updated Jun 26, 2013

Day 1: See those birds. Wonder where they came from. Must be 20 or 30 of them. Look how they swoop, kinda like ballerinas. Wish I could do that. Why do you suppose they’re hanging around my house? Day 2: What’s going on? Stop that! Oh, my windows, my windows. All around the house. Get the broom. I can’t stand out here all day. What a mess. They’re coming right at me. They’re building nests! This is not a bird hotel. What’ll we do? Careful, that bird’s dive-bombing your face. Duck, duck! Oh, that was close. Let’s call Ja...

The Blue Star Museum Program is a collaboration between Blue Star Families, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Department of Defense to provide free museum admission to military families around the country.
