  • Of Cabbages and Kings

    Luella Dow, Contributor|Updated Jun 21, 2013

Jeff Levine is a junior at EWU specializing in criminal justice. He said, “I would like a career in law enforcement that ‘takes care’ of the bad guys.” I don’t want an office job. I like work that changes every day.” This was the ‘driving factor’, he said, that inspired Jeff to reach for his goal. He knows he has the ability to respond to emergencies and be at the scene immediately. Levine played baseball at Centralia’s Community college before he transferred to EW...

    JAMES EIK, Staff Reporter|Updated Jun 21, 2013

Some drivers filling up at the Spoko Fuel gas station in Airway Heights found diesel instead of unleaded gasoline in a mix-up last Tuesday, June 11. According to a press release sent out by the Spokane Tribe, which owns Spoko Fuel, R.E. Powell Distributing Co., placed diesel fuel in the unleaded gasoline tanks at the station. Employees at Spoko Fuel blocked off access to the gas pumps once the situation became apparent. The convenience store’s operation continued while crews drained the underground tanks of the diesel f...

  • Looking Back

    Updated Jun 21, 2013

1 Years Ago June 26, 2003 Cheney residents on five residential streets were going to have to deal with construction equipment as crews spent $200,000 to refurbish Union and H streets, plus First through Seventh. Medical Lake’s long-awaited north end wastewater treatment facility was just 45 days away from completion following City Council’s approval of a pair of contracts for a new lift station and the installation of nearly 4,000 feet of new piping. The City of Cheney was preparing to take over the Cheney Recycling Cen...

  • Cheney's June Yard of the Month

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Jun 21, 2013

When Bonnie Hanna bought the house at 416 G St. a year ago she may not have realized what also came with the property – maintaining a well-managed yard and garden. It’s something neighbor Charles Kenfield got her up to speed on, and in the process becoming the Gardeners of Cheney’s June selection for Yard of the Month. “He’s the one who got me into this mess,” Hanna said with a laugh late Monday afternoon. Kenfield explained that the home’s former owner had done a wonderful j...

  • It's time to repeal the Patriot Act

    Jim Hightower, Columnist|Updated Jun 21, 2013

It’s back. The Patriot Act — that grotesque, ever-mutating, hydra-headed monstrosity from the Bush-Cheney Little Shop of Horrors — has risen again, this time with an added twist of Orwellian intrusiveness from the Obamacans. Since 2006, Team Bush, and then Team Obama, have allowed the little-known, hugely powerful National Security Agency to run a daily dragnet through your and my phone calls — all on the hush-hush, of course, not informing us spyees. Now exposed, leaders of both parties are piously pointing to the Patriot...

  • America loses the 'war on terror'

    Ben Shapiro, Columnist|Updated Jun 21, 2013

On Sept. 11, 2001, al-Qaida terrorists, on orders from their superiors based in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan, flew U.S. commercial planes into the World Trade Center towers and the Pentagon. They would have targeted the White House or Capitol with a fourth plane if not for the heroism of the passengers on Flight 93. Overall, almost 3,000 Americans were murdered. Nine days later, President George W. Bush told the nation, “We condemn the Taliban regime. ... Our war on terror begins with al-Qaida.” Our war on terror is now ove...

  • Abandoned animals are a problem

    Updated Jun 21, 2013

There is an ongoing and ever-growing problem in Cheney. At the end of each spring quarter at EWU, when students leave Cheney to return home, abandoned pets are left to fend for themselves. Evidently, the students believe these animals are well-suited for this type of life. These animals will starve to death unless a well-meaning citizen feeds them, spays them, de-worms them and vaccinates them. Who can afford to do all those things? These abandoned female animals soon become pregnant and litters are born which are impossible...

  • American's lack of interest in NSA snooping is puzzling

    Updated Jun 21, 2013

Right on the heels of the Supreme Court saying it was OK for police to take samples of DNA from people they might arrest for certain levels of crime came Edward Snowden. Snowden is the former National Security Agency contractor who leaked top-secret documents disclosing extensive U.S. surveillance of telephone calls and Internet communications. It was surprising to learn that American’s saw this potential threat with relative indifference. Just 41 percent perceived the National Security Agency’s monitoring of phone and ema...

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Jun 21, 2013

Thanks to the support of community businesses, students at Cheney’s Salnave Elementary School will continue to enjoy a little natural shade in their commons area. Last Thursday several faculty and staff members came together to transplant what Salnave kindergarten teacher Becky Hansen termed in a news release “an iconic Salnave feature: a full-sized, indoor Schefflera tree.” “Commonly called an umbrella tree,” Hansen said. The tree has been in the open, sunlight-...

  • CHS senior wins car, then donates it to friend

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Jun 21, 2013

It’s somewhat of a tradition for some lucky Cheney High School graduating senior to win a refurbished car at the Senior All-Nighter. It’s not quite a tradition for the senior who wins the vehicle to give it to a friend. But, that’s what 2013 graduate Sami Sheffels did at the annual post-commencement celebration June 7 held at the high school’s Little Theatre. The car, a 1999 Hyundai Accent, was one of 15 grand prizes students had a chance to win by having their name drawn i...

    JAMES EIK, Staff Reporter|Updated Jun 21, 2013

At its Monday, June 17 meeting, the City Council authorized TD&H Engineering to handle the review, which will also include looking at future areas of the city that aren’t using the sewer system right now. City Manager Albert Tripp pointed out that the Southwest corner of the city, near Craig and McFarlane roads, was one of the areas that doesn’t have sewer connections. The last time an up...

  • Generating local excitement

    DREW PETERSON, Staff Intern|Updated Jun 21, 2013

It might be a busy summer for the Cheney Farmer’s Market if last Tuesday was any indication of how the rest of the season will play out. The market, which opened June 11 in the City Hall parking lot at 609 Second St., provides an opportunity for Cheney residents and surrounding communities to sift through a vast selection of locally produced foods and crafts from nearby vendors. “There was a lot of excitement about the market this year and we were as busy as I’ve ever seen the Cheney Farmer’s Market last Tuesday when we open...

  • Eastern hopes for good budget news

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Jun 20, 2013

While state budget negotiations haven’t moved much past the impasse setting in Olympia, officials at Eastern Washington University retain some degree of confidence that budget numbers for funding higher education won’t move much off the original proposals. A budget overview presentation given to the university’s board of trustees at their May 16 meeting indicated proposals from the House and Senate were relatively close for the 2013-2015 biennium, with the former at $73.63 million and the latter at just over $75 milli...
