    Updated Jun 6, 2014

The Cheney Cemetery Association would like to thank all of our wonderful volunteers who helped make this year’s Memorial Day program and breakfast so successful. We appreciate everyone who helped and are very grateful. Thank you to EWU ROTC Lt. Col. Jason Pape, whose voice rang out over the program audience as he spoke about the solemn reason for observing Memorial Day. Special thanks must go to all of the young people who gave their time to honor the fallen American heroes of war on Memorial Day. Cub Scout Pack 365 placed A...

  • Since freedom of expression was paid for, we should be using it

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Jun 6, 2014

June 6 is the 70th anniversary of the Allied invasion of Europe during World War II — D-Day. Sadly, some of us don’t know this, and if we do, we don’t take the time to think about what it means. Friday is also the 73rd anniversary of the conclusion of the three-day epic Battle of Midway, June 4-6, an event less known than D-Day. Midway is a small island that, as the name implies, is halfway across the Pacific between North America and Asia. During WWII it was a major refueling point for ships and planes and a target for invas...

  • Some grad speakers can generate heat; others not

    Updated Jun 6, 2014

Graduation speakers are a hot topic these days. It’s that time of year as colleges and high schools churn out their latest product lines. The speaker that got people the hottest under the collar was former United States Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. And she never uttered a word on the stage. Rice was invited to speak at the commencement for Rutgers University in New Jersey. But her ties to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan while serving in the administration of George W. Bush — and allegations from students and pro...

Cheney High School graduating senior Paige Warnick has done something few seniors ever accomplish. In a news release, district officials said Warnick “with the help and thoughtful support of her parents, has always prioritized school attendance above other commitments. • Cheney School District enrollment stabilizes above 2012-2013 numbers

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Jun 6, 2014

The Cheney School District’s enrollment counts have flattened out over the past several months — but that still means the number of full-time equivalent students and actual headcounts are running above what was budgeted and above last year’s totals. A report given to the board of directors at their May 28 meeting showed FTE numbers for May at 4,043.53 students, a decrease of two students from both the April and March figures and 16 from the February count. Kassidy Probert, the district’s executive director of finance...

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Jun 6, 2014

The Medical Lake School District board directors approved the first and second readings of the student’s responsibility and rights policy at the May 29 school board meeting. The policy outlined different rules that students must follow while on school property. It also states that school faculty will assist in “maintaining student behavior that will promote a positive learing environment.” Medical Lake Middle School principal Sylvia Campbell said both staff and parents in the community examined this year’s policy prior t...

  • Cheney Middle School trio hopes to make history in Atlanta

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Jun 6, 2014

What are the great themes of world history up to 1492? How about 1492 to 1933? OK, 1933 to the present? OK, maybe something closer to home. How's your understanding of the causes of the Whiskey Rebellion? Why was the battle of Midway important? Who was D.W. Griffith, or John Nance Garner? If you don't know, you'll likely survive but you might want to bone up a bit more on your history. If you do know, and are a current or incoming Cheney Middle School student, you should look...

  • Medical Lake claims 1A team track championship

    Paul Delaney, Staff Reporter|Updated Jun 5, 2014

For Medical Lake co-head track coach Gene Blankenship, winning the state 1A track team championship last Saturday certainly came from left field. Or maybe from about 10,500 feet away, the distance Jacob and Micah Dingfield covered to finish the 3,200-meter run? The brothers' No. 3 and No. 6 finishes proved to be the event that finally pushed the Cardinals to a most unlikely finish at Eastern Washington University's Roos Field, site of the Washington Interscholastic Activities...

  • Schwarzer steps down as Cardinal girls' basketball coach

    Paul Delaney, Staff Reporter|Updated Jun 5, 2014

Citing her desire to not miss more of her young son’s early years, Medical Lake girls’ basketball coach Carey Schwarzer announced she would step away from the position. “The main and pretty much my only reason for stepping down is I want to have more time for my family,” Schwarzer said. “My son just turned 2 and I just feel like I missed too much of his first two years.” Schwarzer’s son Brian has somewhat of a love-hate relationship with basketball, she said. “During the seaso...

In singles action, senior Solomon Springberry advanced to the semifinals after he came back from a one-set deficit to beat Pullman’s Josh Sewell, 0-6, 6-1, 6-3. “That was good for him” boys’ tennis head coach Jesse Erickson said. “Solomon looked like a completely different player after that first set. The SummerHawks opened their season with a 14-2 win over Northwest Christian. Connor and Logan Pratt split pitching duties, with each brother only allowing one hit. They also took advantage of NWC’s six walks, and three errors. Andrew “Goobs” Witt, on two occasions, brought in a bases loaded walk to earn RBIs. The SummerHawks also had some success at bat after singles from the Pratt brothers, Henry Moore...

Head coach Gerald Morton said Marchand showed the great mindset that she had at the start of the season. “There is no question she has the swing, talent and work ethic to be a great golfer,” Morton said. “I was concerned about her mental toughness, but she brushed that concern away and played two...

  • Wishing a very happy 75th birthday to Little League baseball

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Jun 5, 2014

Seventy-five years ago this Friday, organized baseball for kids began on a small field two-thirds the size of a regular diamond in Williamsport, Penn. Today, Little League International is composed of over 160,000 teams in 80 countries, with millions of viewers — 3.9 million in 2013 to be exact — tuning in every August to watch its World Series. Not a bad outcome for the vision of oil company clerk Carl Stotz, who received 56 rejections from potential sponsors for the league he sought to create before landing a $30 check fro...

  • One-run losses eliminate Cardinals in state softball play

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jun 5, 2014

One game Medical Lake couldn't put the stop to a last-inning rally by their opponent and lost to Seattle Christian 9-8. In the next the Cardinals ran out of runs as a seventh-inning rally fell short, handing Zillah a 6-5 win in the 1A state softball championships last Friday in Richland. The losses knocked the Cardinals out of the tournament after just one day, ending their season under rookie head coach Tim Blakely with a 17-10 record. "We battled, that was the biggest...

  • Small Blackhawks contingent does well at state track

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Jun 5, 2014

For a young team, the Cheney boys and girls track and field squads gave indications of good things to come next year during their post-season meets, including last weekend’s 2A/3A/4A state competition at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma. Three of the four girls making the trip made it to the medal stand, while the lone Blackhawk boy, Steaven Zachman, also brought home hardware. The junior qualified for the finals in the 800-meter run with a preliminary time of 1 minute, 59.38 seconds on Friday and then turned around and b...
