  • Looking Back

    Updated May 19, 2016

1 Years Ago May 25, 2006 There was concern in Medical Lake following the recent closure of four businesses, including, Inch by Inch Women’s store, Pizza Factory, the Wooden Spoon Café and the Medical Lake Emporium. The deadline to move the historic Sterling-Moorman House, or see it face possible demolition, was fast approaching. Funding to move the home was still lagging. Cheney High School alum Steve Emtman was one of 15 former players and coaches selected for induction into the College Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2...

  • Listen to Dave Wilson, he listens to you

    Updated May 19, 2016

I am a voter from the 5th Congressional District of Washington (Spokane County) who has been totally disgusted with Congress. The Republican and Democratic representatives who are pulling in six-figure salaries with lots of benefits (taxpayer dollars) are doing nothing except maintaining a gridlock. Many representatives owe their allegiance to special interest groups and big money corporations rather than the hardworking people of Eastern Washington. When I heard a TV ad about Dave Wilson who is running as an Independent for...

  • Please help save the John Wayne Pioneer Trail

    TED BLASZAK, Contributor|Updated May 19, 2016

I am from Tekoa, Washington (population 843). We are your neighbors to the south. Though we are a small farming community on the Washington-Idaho border we are connected to many bigger cities by the John Wayne Pioneer Trail. If you were to leave your house this summer and get on a bike, horse, or sturdy hiking boots, you could cross almost the entire state on a path with no cars and end up in our town. The trail is 285 miles long, a 100-foot wide ribbon of beauty extending through lush forests, dramatic scablands and the...

  • Every elderly person deserves the same respect and care

    Updated May 19, 2016

In the Associated Press’ May 8 story “Nursing homes turn to eviction to drop difficult patients,” readers learn that nursing homes in different parts of the country are — as the article put it — “increasingly evicting their most challenging residents.” Advocacy groups say many of the residents who are targeted for eviction are those who pay with Medicaid and are difficult to take care for, including some who are suffering from dementia in favor of short-term rehabilitation patients and those who pay privately. In the AP sto...

  • Wait to get behind the wheel after using marijuana

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated May 19, 2016

I came across a couple of reports that had to do with automobile accidents and marijuana use. According to data from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, “the percentage of drivers in fatal crashes who recently used marijuana more than doubled between 2013 and 2014 in Washington state” and “one in six drivers involved in fatal crashes in the state recently used marijuana in 2014.” I have nothing against marijuana. I don’t smoke it, but I have friends who use it for recreational and medicinal purposes. When it comes to...

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated May 19, 2016

Less than a year since the silos began to rise on the horizon at Highline Grain's Four Lakes terminal, the newest activity is product actually being moved. "It's going very well," Keith Bailey, general manager and CEO of Ag Ventures, and the operations officer for Highline Grain, said. For a start-up things have gone surprisingly well with just minor tune-ups and final punch-list items currently being worked on. "Once we got started we found things that needed to be...

  • Member no shows cancels AH planning meeting

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated May 19, 2016

Lack of a quorum led to cancellation of the May 11 Airway Heights Planning Commission meeting, but it likely won’t lead to delays in a project commission members would have discussed. A public hearing had been scheduled for review and comment on a 75-unit multifamily housing project called Galena Apartments. However the only commissioners in attendance were Nicholas Messing and incoming commissioner Sean Fell, forcing Development Services Director Derrick Braaten to cancel the meeting at 6:20 p.m. The Galena project site, p...

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated May 19, 2016

An increase in the price of consultant work for an upcoming road project created questions at the Airway Heights City Council’s May 16 meeting. • West Plains road work

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated May 19, 2016

Residents of the West Plains might want to adopt a sometimes used phrase to describe the philosophy of the Washington state Department of Transportation when it comes to driving around this summer — expect delays. A number of road projects are on tap for the area, beginning in Cheney, which has four scheduled. The City Council awarded a $59,358 contract to Five Star Concrete at its May 10 meeting for removal and replacement of approximately 7,400 square feet of sidewalk along First Street between Betz and Mullinix roads. C...
