  • Good results despite no placement at districts for Cheney tennis

    JAMES EIK, Staff Reporter|Updated May 17, 2013

Cheney boys’ tennis team saw some positive results in its districts’ play at Pullman last Friday. While the results don’t display the type of play quality shown by players, head coach Jesse Erickson said the effort was phenomenal. “The guys played the best they have all season,” he said. ”The results just weren’t quite what we were hoping for.” Cheney finished in fourth place at districts, mirroring their fouth place overall finish in the Great Northern League with a 7-7 record. Among the successes this season, senior...

  • A good day for Cheney girls' track and field at District 7 meet

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated May 17, 2013

The only place the Cheney girls’ track team didn’t dominate last weekend’s District 7 meet at West Valley was on the scoreboard. The Blackhawks won nine district event championships and placed second in three, but came up 10 points short of a team title, losing 155-145 to East Valley. “We just didn’t quite have the depth as East Valley,” head coach Tom Stralser said, adding the Knights managed just two district champions and four, second place finishes. The top two places...

Forward Trevan Estrellado played a part in all three of Cheney’s goals while goalkeeper Joe Scott was solid defending the net as the Blackhawks topped a physical and skilled Toppenish team 3-1 Saturday. The win gives Cheney the No. 2 regional seed in the 2A state tournament and a game Wednesday, May 15, with Central Washington Athletic Conference third seed West Valley-Yakima. “We’re on track,” Blackhawks head coach Mark Kiver said. “We’re doing semi-what we want.” The...

  • A bit of superstition is part of Medical Lake baseball success

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated May 17, 2013

Medical Lake’s baseball team has conducted its massive turnaround in the traditional ways. In crafting a 19-3 overall record that has earned the Cardinals one of 16 berths in the state 1A tournament that will trim things down to a single winner over the next two weeks, the Cardinals have done all the things good baseball teams do. “We’re known a little bit for our pitching, we just have good fundamentals,” head coach Kerry Kelly said. But there’s something else that Kelly is...

  • Cardinals off to state after Bi-District sweep

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated May 17, 2013

Medical Lake has passed its biggest test of the season so far on the baseball diamond. Now the exams continue, and probably get tougher. Following a 6-0 win Saturday morning over Brewster, plus surviving to claim an 8-7 victory over defending state champion Cashmere in the afternoon, the Cardinals have made the round of 16 for the first time since 2003. “I think we’re going to have a little bit of a target on us now that we’ve knocked off one of the giants,” Medical Lake head...
