    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Apr 30, 2015

The Medical Lake boys made the most of their lone Northeast A League tennis match breezing past Freeman 5-0, April 23. The victory kept the Cardinals (5-1) on top of the league standings by a half game over Lakeside (4-1). “The boys came out firing on all cylinders this match,” co-head coach Jake Wesselman said. • Medical Lake baseball coach keeps looking for answers

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Apr 30, 2015

With their runners not getting on base with enough regularity, their pitchers failing to find the strike zone enough and defense doing a lot of fumbling, Medical Lake High School’s baseball coach Kerry Kelly is reaching for anything that might help. The Cardinals are reeling lately with four straight losses and have dropped five of their last six contests, the most recent a 9-2 Northeast A League loss at Riverside April 21 and being swept in an NEA doubleheader April 24, l...

  • Opponents pitching, hitting do in Cardinals

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Apr 30, 2015

Medical Lake faced some of the Northeast A League’s best pitching one day and the best hitting on another and the results were not pretty. The Cardinals were limited to two hits in a 7-0 loss at Riverside April 21, and allowed just seven at Suncrest April 24 in a 14-4 loss at Lakeside. Then even with nine hits in the second game, Medical Lake could not keep up with the Eagle bats in a 20-8 loss . Medical Lake lost for the fourth consecutive time in a week that started with a...

  • Cardinal track gets NEA road wins at Newport

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Apr 30, 2015

Medical Lake got a Northeast A League track triple-dual track meet victory, spiced with just a touch of revenge April 22 at Newport. The Cardinal boys scored an 88-45 win over Newport and 86-62 against Freeman on the strength of their runners. The ML girls lost 98-49 to Newport and 116-36 to Freeman the same day. “The thing is we were really competing against Freeman,” Medical Lake co-head coach Gene Blankenship said. “They beat us by one point, same place last year.” Medical...

  • Cheney baseball drops doubleheader to West Valley

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Apr 30, 2015

The Cheney High baseball team fell short in their attempt to scale to the top of the Great Northern League mountain and stake a claim for a regular season title as they lost both games in an April 25 league doubleheader against first-place West Valley, 2-1, 6-2. In game one, West Valley scored runs in the top of the sixth and seventh innings off Cheney's fielding errors. In the bottom of the seventh, Dominic Bonilla, who went 4 for 4 at the plate, batted in Kyle Jones for...

Members of the Medical Lake tennis team show off the new sign at their tennis courts. The sign was paid for with a donation from 1967 MLHS graduate David Ralphs who for many years has donated funds and equipment to the tennis program. Ralphs sometimes donates either tennis rackets or money to buy them for those who cannot afford them....

  • Blackhawks fall 1-0 at Pullman

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Apr 30, 2015

Sometimes it’s easy to forget the fact that when it comes to Great Northern League boys’ soccer, everybody wants to beat Cheney. That’s what three straight GNL titles and five appearances in the state title game the past seven years, with one state championship, will do for your reputation. It’s something this year’s Blackhawks team has had to deal with more often, given the GNL’s five-team alignment and three regular season game format, which tends to breed familiarity and more determination in those coming up on the shor...

  • Eagles not missing much of a beat as spring football practice ends

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Apr 30, 2015

Vernon Adams who? With spring practice nearly finished for Eastern Washington University's football team following last Saturday's Red-White game, there appears to be no looking in the rearview mirror. The Eagles - minus their talented All-American quarterback, who back in February saw the turf promised to be greener and his chances greater for his football future in Eugene with the Oregon Ducks - have rolled out the new models that look good and seem to perform quite well....

  • Medical Lake soccer wins pair of overtime thrillers

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Apr 30, 2015

With their hopes of winning a Northeast A League soccer title in their own hands, the Medical Lake boys' soccer team got a big performance from the foot of Nick Rosenbeck. The junior scored a pair of overtime goals to keep the Cardinals perfect last week following wins of 3-2 over Colville April 21 and Newport 2-1 on April 23. Now with three straight victories and five wins in their last six contests, Medical Lake (5-1 NEA, 5-7 overall) is part of a three-team tie atop the...

  • Blackhawk runners, throwers peaking at right time

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Apr 30, 2015

The Cheney High girls track and field team ran its Great Northern League record to 3-0 with an 84-66 dual-meet win last Thursday at East Valley, setting a number of season-best marks in the process. And while the Cheney boys saw their record fall to 2-1 with a 97-48 loss to the Knights, they too posted season highs. The Cheney girls had 10 first-place performances, with at least three athletes in the top five slots in virtually all events. Alsatta Bakana and Kristie McGourin both had season-best performances in the 100- and...

  • Lady Blackhawks softball continues to roll

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Apr 30, 2015

The more the Cheney High softball team wins, the more believers they make. You can now add their head coach to that list. Gary Blake knew going into the season he had a good team in all facets of the game. What gave Blake pause was a deficiency in the competition Cheney was facing, scoring 75 runs in their first three games with almost all of their games over the first 6-7 weeks failing to go the full seven innings. Last week's three wins has Blake believing, especially...

  • Eloise and Jim Goodwin share the spirit of giving

    LUELLA DOW, Contributor|Updated Apr 30, 2015

Eloise, the new baby in the Holt family, was born in Spokane on June 16, 1929. As Eloise grew, school boundaries changed, too. Eloise spent grades 4-8 at Four Lakes, changed to Cheney Junior High (now Cheney Middle School) and finally Cheney High School. During those busy days Eloise worked on the school “Blackhawk” newsletter and the “Pine Cone” yearbook. She was active on the drill team as well. On June 19, 1947, the family said, “Eloise has found her one, true love.” Eloise and Jim Goodwin were married. They established a h...
