    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Apr 28, 2017

See a photo gallery from the event here. The Cheney boys soccer team is having a difficult time escaping the shootout - at least as far as its season series with Great Northern League opponent Pullman High School is concerned. The Blackhawks and Greyhounds have faced off three times, with all three contests needing to be decided by un-timed penalty kicks. Of its total 13 games so far this season, Cheney has gone to the shootout four times. April 18, the Blackhawks and...

Cheney High School girls tennis head coach Courtney Webb predicted the matches between her team and the other Great Northern League schools would be close. Other than Cheney's 6-1 loss to Pullman on April 11, she's been right so far. The Blackhawks went 1-1 in league play last week with a 4-3 win against East Valley, April 20 and a 4-3 loss to Clarkston, April 24. In the East Valley match, No. 1 singles Alannah Lewis continued her...

  • Timely hits fail to fall for Cardinals' softball

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Apr 27, 2017

If it isn’t Mother Nature and her meteorological mayhem, then there’s likely a pitcher who can also wreak havoc on the Medical Lake softball team. That came in the form of Jaelynn Skok from Chewelah who had the right combination of pitches and timely defense to shut down the Cardinals 5-2 in the team’s lone Northeast A League game last week. “She had us off balance, for sure,” head coach Tim Blakely said. It was a game where, when balls were hit, they went right where the...

  • Repeat performance for Medical Lake boys' soccer

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Apr 27, 2017

Medical Lake soccer coach Zane Higgins might have been wondering last week if he hadn’t seen this movie before. Because in many ways, the Cardinals’ week — a 4-0 win over Deer Park on April 18 and a 5-2 loss to Colville two days later in Northeast A League play — bore a striking resemblance to several weeks ago when his team had a similar split. Maybe what separated the two was that Medical Lake traveled to Clarkston for a nonleague contest and a 3-1 loss against the Great N...

  • Season marks fall for ML track

    Updated Apr 27, 2017

Medical Lake track swept through its initial Northeast A League meet with Newport on April 19 scoring easy victories over Newport. The boys won 106–26 and the girls 101–40. The Cardinal boys nearly swept their events, losing only in the shot put, discus and javelin. The girls had a nearly similar performance winning in all but the 4x100 and 4x200 relays, as well as discus and high jump. The teams collected 36 personal records, but saw a number of season records set as well. Those included Keyhon Ross’s 23.50 second time...

  • Medical Lake boys' tennis in tight NEA matches

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Apr 27, 2017

Medical Lake’s boys’ tennis team had a busy week, but maybe not as productive as they wanted following nailing down one-win and two losses in Northeast A League play last week. In a scrambled schedule due to multiple changes, the Cardinals lost to Freeman 3-2 on April 18 at home, beat the Scotties the following day, also 3-2 but on the road, before losing 3-2 at home to Riverside, April 20. Justin Lohr and Daniel Miller at No. 2 doubles, along with No. 1 singles, Noah Ray...

  • Medical Lake girls fall to Freeman

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Apr 27, 2017

Medical Lake’s girls’ tennis team faced the same opponent, Freeman, and suffered similar 4-1 losses in Northeast A League play last week. On April 18, the Cardinals got their lone win, 6-3, 6-2 from Elsa Henningsson in play that had to be continued the following afternoon in Freeman. Two of the three doubles matches were played the next day, but it did not improve the outcome. “Elsa played a smart match,” co-head coach Dawn Eliassen said. “She moved her gal forward and backw...

  • Up and down season continues for Medical Lake baseball

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Apr 27, 2017

Medical Lake put an end to one span of paltry offense just to see another begin in last week's Northeast A League baseball play. On the heels of a recent twin trouncing by Freeman, the King Kong's of the Northeast A League, Medical Lake did some hammering of their own, clubbing Colville 11-5 on April 18. But the offensive woes returned in losses to Chewelah 9-1 and 9-0 to close out the week, April 21 and 22. "Based on expectations we have held serve," head coach Kerry Kelly...

  • Orland Killin dinner came from humble, lively start

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Apr 27, 2017

Traditions can have the most unlikely beginnings. Take birthday cake candles for instance, said to have been first used by the ancient Greeks as a tribute to Artemis, goddess of the moon. While the Orland Killin dinner, dance and auction bears no such notoriety, the fact that it celebrates a 36th birthday this Saturday, April 29, at Reese Court might be considered a winning lucky lottery ticket in a number of ways. Memories more than money seem certain to be the biggest...

  • Defense makes its case in second EWU spring scrimmage

    Updated Apr 27, 2017

Big-play offense in the form of touchdown passes of 63 and 70 yards from quarterback Gage Gubrub to Nsimba Webster provided the second Eastern Washington spring scrimmage with its flash. But it was the defense that got a lot of the attention from head coach Aaron Best last Saturday at Roos Field. “The guys in the red jerseys brought the energy,” Best said of his defensive squad. “It was obvious in certain situations — they made things happen.” The offense generated 294 yards through the air on 33 attempts, while rushing 33 ti...

It’s the second league title in three years for the Blackhawk girls. The boys had a bit rougher time against their Pullman opponents, losing 89-56 to finish the regular season at 1-3. First-place finishes on the track for the girls went to Alexis Miller (100-meter dash), Alsatta Bakana (200) and Stephanie Assonke...
