  • Nothing like a song to change a serious tune

    Luella Dow, Contributor|Updated Apr 25, 2013

A tune from 1927 “Oh, We ain’t got a barrel of money. Maybe we’re ragged and funny. But, we travel along, singing a song. Side by side.” In case you’re wondering what’s wrong with my computer or my head, I just thought a little respite from last week’s serious talk might be in order. The lyrics (yes, it is a song) to the above tune were written by Gus Kahn and Harry M. Woods. This morning when my dog was walking me to our designated turn toward home and the sun was finally shining so sweetly, the little ditty popped into my m...

1 Years Ago May 1, 2003 A 35-year-old woman escaped from a 35-hour ordeal in Cheney after she was abducted in Spokane and taken to the home of Jonathan C. Hair. The abductor reportedly assaulted the woman both physically and sexually before the victim escaped to the nearby home of Cheney Mayor Amy Jo Sooy. The Washington State Supreme Court ruled to disbar attorney Steve Miller, ending a seven and a half year battle with the former Cheney city attorney. Miller, who served 27-years as an attorney, was charged with...

HONOLULU – Looking down at the buzzing streets filled with tourists and out toward an ocean that seemed endless, I turned around to compliment Walter and Myrtle Powers on their beautiful condo. There the elderly couple stood, smiling and holding hands as they offered me a seat. Walter Powers and Myrtle Powers, 88 and 91 years old respectively, are two World War II veterans and have been happily married for 66 years. Walter Powers was born in Fort Worth, Texas, and spent his c...

  • Medical Lake falls to Lakeside in NEA track

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Apr 25, 2013

The wind might not have been so much of a factor as the week before but the Lakeside Eagles certainly were as they won both ends of a Northeast A League track meet last Wednesday at Medical Lake. The visiting Eagles scored an 85-60 boy’s victory and raced past the girls 111-30. The Medical Lake boys got wins in nine events while the girls had victories in four. Sophomore Tellas Johnson again ruled the sprints, and certainly the high jump where his 5-foot, 10-inch jump bettered...

  • Cardinal girls shoot to top of tennis standings

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Apr 25, 2013

The Medical Lake girls’ tennis team’s undefeated week has vaulted them into the lead in the Northeast A League. “This was a huge week for Lady Cardinal tennis,” head coach Dawn Eliassen said. “Holy cow, three league matches, three league wins.” Those victories came 5-0 over Lakeside, 4-1 versus Chewelah and 4-1 at Freeman last Saturday. Medical Lake is now 4-0 in the NEA with a one-game lead over Chewelah. Monday at home versus Lakeside, the Cards had to battle from behind...

  • Medical Lake completes baseball about face

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Apr 25, 2013

Last year about this time the players and coaches involved in Medical Lake baseball could have easily packed it in. The Cardinals were in the process of exiting the Great Northern League and that was about as comfortable as getting tossed out of a moving car with their 1-17 record and losses of 18-0 to West Valley and 11-2 to Pullman as the season drew to a close. It didn’t get a lot better come time for American Legion play either as Medical Lake’s AA League entry fin...

  • Cardinals march on

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Apr 25, 2013

The Medical Lake Cardinals continue to carefully march towards a potential Northeast A League baseball regular season championship. With a 3-0 week behind them following wins of 12-0 last Tuesday against Newport and then a doubleheader sweep of Freeman Friday - 7-1 and 8-4 - the Cards ran their winning streak to six, crafting a 3 1/2 game lead with five games remaining. Medical Lake (12-1 NEA, 12-2 overall) will play at Lakeside (8-4, 8-5) Friday, travel to Chewelah (8-4,...

  • Cardinals' late lapse leads to Lakeside's win

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Apr 25, 2013

It only took moments for the thrill of victory to turn to the agony of defeat. Last Thursday’s Medical Lake boy’s Northeast A League soccer showdown with Lakeside at Medical Lake Middle School turned once and for all on a momentary mental lapse as the Eagles scored a 3-2 win. Dallas White had just single-handedly tied the game in the 78th minute with his close-in kick from the middle that found the top of the net. And the celebration had begun. But before the Cardinals cou...
