  • 'Strange play' preserves doubleheader split for Lady Hawks

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Apr 24, 2014

The Cheney Lady Hawks softball team went 2-1 last week, downing Pullman 14-5 and earning a split at West Valley, thanks to what head coach Gary Blake termed a “really strange play” in game two. Leading 11-6 in the top of the sixth, the Lady Hawks had the bases loaded with one out when Cheyenne Wright hit a soft, just-above-the-head-height pop up that landed halfway between the pitching circle and home plate. West Valley’s pitcher ran forward to field the ball and threw home for a supposed force out on Cheney’s Julia Boyd co...

Mason Van Stone (No. 1 boys’ singles) found himself in a tough spot as he was swept by Lincoln Hill, 6-0, 6-0. Boys’ tennis head coach Jesse Erickson said Van Stone repeatedly found himself in long 20-stroke rallies throughout the match. “He just couldn’t execute,” Erickson said. “When you play at the No. 1 spot, you’re going to find yourself in those long rallies.” Ryan Axtell (No. 2 boys’ singles) lost...

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Apr 24, 2014

Hitting did the trick one game and pitching the next with the result being Medical Lake sweeping a softball doubleheader at home against Kettle Falls and staying very relevant in the Northeast A League playoff picture. The Cardinals (7-3 NEA, 8-3 overall) rolled over the Bulldogs (6-5, 7-5) 13-5, clubbing 15 hits including a pair of doubles and a home run in game two Saturday. • Boston marathon gets more personal after 2013 bombing

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Apr 24, 2014

For as long as I could remember the Boston Marathon came and went on it’s traditional Patriots’ Day date – the third Monday in April – with little notice. That is other than admiring those who choose to run over 26 miles and wonder what drove them to do so because my numerous walk-jogs in Bloomsday’s 7.46 miles have been generally debilitating. That was until April 15, 2103 when a pair of bombs detonated near the finish line, killing three spectators, injuring more than 200...

  • Colville, Deer Park no match for Cheney soccer

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Apr 24, 2014

Sometimes the hardest games to play are those against teams below your level In these games, Cheney High boys soccer head coach Mark Kiver tells his team to find challenges against opponents that will make aspects of their game better. On the road last week at Deer Park (0-8 Great Northern League, 0-10) and Colville (2-5, 4-6), that was to not let them dictate the game’s style and pace to the Blackhawks. Kiver feels they met with success in that, along with successful outcomes by easily downing the outmatched Stags and I...

  • Idaho's wolf issue could soon become Washington's

    LUELLA DOW, Contributor|Updated Apr 24, 2014

Many years ago, when buffalo roamed the western United States, Native Americans made excellent use of this amazing animal. There were no government officials to patrol the land. If a buffalo, a bear or a wolf became a menace, the natives took care of the problem immediately. Over the years our culture has changed drastically and many times we, neighbors, friends and strangers have found each other defending opposite positions. Some, speaking seriously, say the wolf is beautiful, loving and peaceful. Those of us who have known...

  • Council reviews non-conforming uses

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Apr 24, 2014

The Cheney City Council finally got zoning issues off its agenda at its final meeting in April Tuesday night, but not without some last minute changes. The changes came from city attorney Stanley Schwartz, who sent a memo detailing issues he had with language in Section 97 of the city’s municipal code Chapter 21, the amending and repealing of sections being addressed under Ordinance W-22. Schwartz questioned a code amendment stating that when a non-conforming building or primary structure along First Street between Betz a...
